TheEngelhardtlaboratoryattheUniversityofAlabamaatBirmingham(UAB)isseekingadedicatedandskilledtemporaryfull-timeVeterinaryTechniciantosupportanimalcareandresearchactivities.Thesuccessfulcandidatewillassistwithclinicalcare,procedures,andgeneralhusbandrytoensurethehealthandwelfareofresearchanimalsincompliancewithinstitutionalandregulatoryguidelines.Dependingonfundingacquisition,thispositionhasthepotentialtogofull-time.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide daily care, monitor, and health assessments of research animals.
- Assist veterinarians and research staff with clinical procedures, treatments, and surgeries.
- Administer medications and collect biological samples as directed.
- Monitor animals for signs of illness, distress, or abnormal behavior and report findings promptly.
- Maintain accurate records related to animal health, treatments, and procedures.
- Ensure compliance with IACUC, USDA, and institutional policies and guidelines.
- Support facility operations, including sanitation, equipment maintenance, and inventory management.
- Assist with training of research personnel on proper animal handling and care techniques.
Pay: $18.00 per hour
Qualifications
Qualifications
- Associate's degree in a related field OR High School diploma or GED and two (2) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.
- Veterinary Technician certification (RVT/CVT/LVT) preferred or eligibility to obtain certification.
- Prior experience working with laboratory animals or in a veterinary setting preferred.
- Knowledge of animal handling, restraint, and basic clinical procedures.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate records.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in a research or academic animal facility.
- Familiarity with rodent handling, dosing, and sample collection.
- Understanding of IACUC regulations and animal welfare standards.
Work Conditions
- May involve exposure to animals, allergens, and biological materials.
- Ability to lift, carry, and handle animals and equipment as required.
