Research Technician
FAES | Horticulture and Crop Science
This is a temporary position with continuation contingent upon availability of funds. The successful candidate will provide professional research assistance in the Sustainable Agroecosystems (SAS) Lab, focusing on crop-livestock systems and environmental impact assessments in forage and grazing systems. The role emphasizes enteric methane analyses, soil and forage data processing, and scientific writing, while still including hands-on field and lab support. This position offers valuable experience in a collaborative research environment with strong opportunities to contribute to high-impact publications. We foster a highly collaborative lab culture where team members actively support one another, take ownership of their work, and contribute to collective problem-solving.
Primary Duties
• Support enteric methane analyses, soil and forage sample processing, and associated data quality control.
• Conduct data analysis (soil, forage, greenhouse gas, and enteric methane datasets) and contribute to manuscript preparation and paper writing.
• Assist with field and lab data collection as needed, including sample collection and basic processing in forage and grazing systems.
• Prepare research findings for publications, presentations, reports, and extension materials.
• Support lab operations as needed.
• Other duties and special projects as assigned
Minimum Education Required:
High School diploma or GED.
Required Qualifications
• 1–2 years of relevant experience (2–3 years preferred) in crop-livestock systems, forage management, greenhouse gas assessments, or data analysis.
• Hands-on experience with sample processing, data analysis, and/or laboratory techniques (NIRS, gas chromatography, or similar).
• Demonstrated interest or experience in scientific writing, data visualization, and contributing to publications.
• Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and enthusiasm for collaborative teamwork.
• Valid Ohio driver's license and ability to drive.
• Flexibility for occasional fieldwork travel (~100-mile round trips during peak seasons).
Preferred Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Agricultural, Soil, Animal, or Environmental Sciences.
• Background in sustainable agroecosystems, grazing systems, or integrated crop-livestock systems, proficiency in data analysis software (e.g., R, SAS, Excel, or similar).
• Experience preparing scientific manuscripts or extension materials.
