Job Description

Research Technician (LMS 2499)
Salary £31,916 - £33,910 plus London allowance £5,600 per annum
12 months fixed term | Full time | Location: Hammersmith London
Closing date: 14th July 2026

Main duties / key responsibilities:

  • Maintain worm cultures of wildtype and disease model strains
  • Perform tracking experiments to study the behaviour of wild type and disease worms in response to drugs
  • Assist with lab management

The appointee will:

  1. Conduct research as part of the facility’s Services

  2. If time permits, conduct customer outreach to patient foundations and companies who could use the service

  3. Take an active part in group including group meetings, training and organisational aspects

Education / Qualifications / Training required (will be assessed from application form):

Essential:

  • BSc or equivalent qualification in biological sciences

Desirable:

  • PhD in biological sciences

Previous work experience required (will be assessed from application form and at interview):

Essential:

  • Basic laboratory procedures including molecular biology

Desirable:

  • C. elegans husbandry including maintaining worm strains, freezing, and crosses
  • Experience with behavioural assays
  • Microscopy/imaging of worms
  • Experience with worm transgenesis
  • Experience with quantitative data analysis

Knowledge and experience (will be assessed from application form and at interview

Essential:

  • Knowledge and understanding of cell and/or molecular biology
  • Keen interest in developing skills and experimental methods in worm biology
  • Good written communication skills in English

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of good laboratory practice
  • Data management

Personal skills / Behaviours / Qualities (will be assessed at interview):

Essential:

  • Good verbal communication skills in English

  • High level of motivation and drive

  • Evidence of ability to organise and conduct research projects

  • Ability to work effectively with researchers from different fields (computer scientists to experimental biologists) ranging from postgraduate students to professorial level
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Ability and eagerness to learn new concepts and acquire new skills in biology quickly, and to seek novel and creative solutions to scientific problems
