Job Description

The WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF is part of the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL and thus of the ETH Domain. WSL focuses on the sustainable use and protection of the environment and on the handling of natural hazards. WSL employs approximately 600 people, of whom 180 work at SLF in Davos.

Research scientist in numerical avalanche prediction (80-100%)

The Research Unit
Snow Avalanches and Prevention investigates the formationand dynamics of avalanches, develops prevention measures in the context of integral risk management, operates warning and information systems and is responsible for avalanche warning in the Swiss Alps. The research group Avalanche Formation and Dynamics invites applications for a tenure-track position as

In this position, you will work in the field of numerical avalanche prediction to improve avalanche forecasting. This includes developing models, assimilating novel snow and avalanche data, and integrating results from field and laboratory measurements to better represent the processes responsible for avalanche release in space and time. You will acquire third-party funding for interdisciplinary and practice-oriented research projects and lead them. In addition, you will advise research partners and practitioners and transfer knowledge into practice on avalanche formation and forecasting. You will publish in national and international journals, present at conferences, contribute to teaching activities, and supervise students.

You hold a PhD in natural or engineering sciences, have modelling and/or experimental experience and practical experience in snow instability assessment. You demonstrate strong analytical skills and good organizational and communication abilities. You have a proven track record in acquiring research funding and publishing in peer-reviewed international journals. You have very good knowledge of English and preferably also German. You have experience working in snow-covered mountains and safe winter travel skills. You work independently and reliably, enjoy being part of an international team, and are highly motivated.

Please send your complete application to Clemens Güdel, Human Resources SLF, by uploading the requested documents through our webpage. Applications via email will not be considered. About Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL

The Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL provides science-based solutions for forests, landscapes, biodiversity, natural hazards, and snow and ice in a changing world. As a federal research institute and part of the ETH Domain, WSL commits itself to excellence in research and implementation that benefits nature and society.

As the leading Swiss research institute for terrestrial environmental systems, WSL performs outstanding research at the national and inter- national levels that benefits the environment and society in Switzerland and beyond. We address global challenges driven by land use change, climate change, biodiversity loss, altered bio- geochemical cycles, and urbanisation, as well as their interactions. WSL is thus in a position to develop science-based solutions for sustainable approaches that serve both the environment and society. We accomplish this together with partners from research, practice and the public, to effectively support environmental decision-making and governance. To train the next generations of decision-makers, we engage in teaching and continuing education in the field of terrestrial environmental science. Through its activities and engagement with society, WSL bridges the science-policy gap and contributes to a future rooted in sustainability.
