What we want

The Research Scientist conducts independent research in the field of virology, with a focus on poultry diseases. The incumbent applies advanced scientific knowledge and professional judgment to design and execute research projects, analyze data, and contribute to scientific publications.

This position requires independence, discretion, and decision-making in carrying out research activities. The Research Scientist or Postdoctoral Research Associate is expected to remain current with relevant biomedical literature, contribute to grant proposal development, present findings at scientific conferences, and publish in peer-reviewed journals.

Additional responsibilities include training students and laboratory personnel, assisting with laboratory operations, maintaining accurate records, and ensuring compliance with institutional and regulatory requirements. The role may involve collaboration with other researchers.

Salary: $60,000/annually

Location/Schedule: College Station, TX/Full-Time; May require work outside normal business hours, including evenings and weekends.

Responsibilities

Research

  • Conduct biomedical research in virology under general supervision

  • Design, execute, and troubleshoot laboratory experiments

  • Analyze, interpret, and summarize research data

  • Review and remain current with scientific literature

  • Contribute to the preparation of grant proposals and funding applications

  • Prepare animal use protocols and biosafety compliance documentation

  • Operate and maintain research equipment and laboratory instrumentation

  • Assist with laboratory operations, including maintaining a clean and organized work environment

Presentations, Publication, and Reporting

  • Prepare manuscripts and contribute to research papers, articles, and publications

  • Present research findings at scientific conferences and seminars

  • Participate in preparation of technical progress reports for research sponsors

Mentoring

  • Mentor and train graduate students and other laboratory personnel.

  • Provide guidance in experimental design, laboratory techniques, and data analysis.

Required Education and Experience

  • Ph.D. in a biological sciences or DVM (or equivalent) with M.S.

  • Six years of related experience in a specialized and relevant field of research.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in a biological sciences field

  • DVM (or equivalent) and M.S. in biological sciences

  • Laboratory research experience in virology, cell biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, immunology, or related biomedical fields, with demonstrated productivity (e.g., publications, presentations)

  • Experience in chicken handling and animal experimentation

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Advanced knowledge of laboratory techniques and research methodologies

  • Ability to independently conduct research and exercise sound scientific judgment

  • Proficiency with computers and relevant software for gene sequence and statistical analysis

  • Ability to operate and maintain specialized laboratory equipment

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and work collaboratively

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Effective scientific presentation skills

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
