Job Description

I. Position Summary:

Under the direction of the Marcus Principal Investigators and Project Directors, perform daily phlebotomy activities of the laboratory accurately and on time. Maintain a safe and professional environment. Performs with confidence, clinical specimen collection and processing duties following established practices and procedures. Maintains required records and documentation. Demonstrates organizational commitment and promotes a positive image to participants, health care providers, and the public in general.

II. Core Competencies:

  • Must be flexible and available based on staffing requirements.
  • Excellent phlebotomy skills to include geriatric.
  • Demonstrates good organization, communication, and interpersonal skills, is able to manage concerns of participants in a professional manner.
  • Capable of handling multiple priorities in a high-volume setting.
  • Ability to perform data-entry.

III. Position Responsibilities:

Fundamental expectations

  • Greet participants appropriately. Treat all participants in a courteous manner.
  • Ensures all field specimens are collected accurately and on time.
  • Collects specimens according to established procedures.
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by testing procedures.

Maintains required records and paperwork

  • Reads, understands and complies with departmental policies, protocols and procedures: (i.e. Procedure Manuals, Safety Manual, Compliance Manual, etc).
  • Maintains all appropriate phlebotomy and sample logs.

Demonstrates organizational commitment

  • Adheres to departmental and company code of grooming and dress code and lab coat policies, appearing neat and clean at all times.
  • Reports on time to work, following attendance guidelines.
  • Communicates appropriately with participants, coworkers and the health care providers.
  • Communicates all unresolved problems immediately to the appropriate Manager, Supervisor, for resolution. Remains polite and courteous at all times.

Miscellaneous duties and responsibilities

  • Keeps work area neat and clean. Disposes of biohazard containers when scheduled.
  • Help with inventories and other tasks as assigned.

IV. Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Medical terminology helpful.
  • Phlebotomy -3 years inclusive of geriatric venipuncture, capillary collections preferred.
  • Phlebotomy certification preferred.
  • Keyboard/data entry application.
  • Customer service in a service environment.
