Job Description Summary
Research Laboratory Technician will perform laboratory research activities including protein characterization and functionality studies, sunflower protein isolation, and LC-MS analysis. The position supports laboratory research and assists with routine laboratory operations including maintaining equipment, supplies, and safety documentation.
Responsibilities
65% – Laboratory Research and Analysis
Conduct laboratory experiments related to food chemistry and protein functionality, including:
- Food chemical analysis of sunflower proteins
- Sunflower protein isolation and functionality testing
- Fluorescence analysis
- LC-MS analysis of protein samples
- Characterization of chlorogenic acid esterase in sunflower protein solutions
- Preparation of samples, reagents, and laboratory materials
- Accurate recording and documentation of experimental procedures and results
- Communication of research findings orally and in written format to the Principal Investigator
20% – Laboratory Operations and Maintenance
Support routine laboratory operations and maintain research equipment, including:
- Maintaining laboratory safety procedures and records
- Monitoring laboratory inventory and assisting with ordering supplies
- Maintaining laboratory equipment and ensuring proper operation
- Preparing laboratory materials and equipment for research experiments
- Ensuring proper storage and disposal of laboratory chemicals and samples
10% – Research Documentation and Student Support
Support research documentation and assist with student research activities:
- Maintain laboratory notebooks and research documentation
- Assist with compiling research data and summaries
- Provide guidance to undergraduate students on laboratory procedures and safety protocols
- Demonstrate laboratory techniques as needed
5% – Other Duties
Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Food Science, Chemistry, Biology, or other STEM discipline preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant laboratory experience.
- Experience conducting laboratory work or research experiments
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Ability to perform laboratory duties independently with limited supervision
- Ability to accurately conduct experiments and record research data
- Ability to collaborate with the Principal Investigator and other researchers
- Ability to operate laboratory equipment and maintain a safe working environment
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Desired Qualifications
- Prior research experience in food science or related laboratory environments
- Experience working with protein characterization techniques or LC-MS analysis
