Employee will work independently to do experiments as jointly designed by the technologist, the Research Fellow and/or the Lab Manager. This position requires expertise in melanocyte biology, tissue and cell culture aseptic techniques and strong experience in molecular biology and mouse models. Our group studies cell death/proliferation signals in relation to development and disease, particularly in cancer of pigment cells (melanoma). We attempt to understand critical modes of cell homeostasis with a goal of molecular targeted therapy as well as prevention of melanoma.

Qualifications

Education
Bachelor's Degree Related Field of Study required

Experience

  • Minimum of 2.5 years of directly related and progressively more responsible experience required.
  • Experience in molecular biology, immunohistochemistry, mammalian cell culture, and mouse colony management is required.
  • Applicants must be reliable, well-organized and have good log-keeping abilities.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Independently oversee the technical aspects of experiments in the lab. Troubleshoot and develop modifications of existing assay techniques, experimental protocols or new procedures as necessary.
  • Establish and work with primary human melanocytes, melanoma cell lines and iPSC (induced pluripotent stem cells) to test hypotheses. Maintain bank of primary human melanocytes and iPSC.
  • Use of specialized equipment: Nanozoomer, Nikon Confocal microscope, microtome, Qiaxcel, Qiacube, tissue embedder, Nanodrop, Qubit, Azure C600 Imager, and Victor plate readers. Assist the lab manager with maintenance and troubleshooting of equipment as well as the training of new users.
  • Maintains and organizes chemical inventory, antibody and cell databases.
  • Breeding and maintenance of core mouse colony.
  • Maintains mouse colony data in web-based software, assists with initial setup for the accounts of other lab members and trains lab members to use the software.
  • Receives, distributes, and logs supplies received in laboratory. Assist the lab manager with ordering of supplies.
  • Record results in a clear, detailed, well-organized manner.
  • Critical analysis of data and preparation of verbal and written summaries of work for lab meetings.
  • Assists with organizing materials for publications or presentations.
  • Orientation and training of new graduate students, fellows, technicians and summer students, in coordination with the Lab Manager.
