Interns will receive individualized mentorship and gain exposure to multiple stages of the research process, including literature reviews, epidemiologic analyses, and scientific writing. Interns may also have opportunities to contribute to scientific manuscripts and/or research posters.
This experience is well suited for students interested in exploring graduate school, medical school, or future careers in epidemiology, public health, and health-related research.
An exciting internship opportunity is available within a Cancer Research Center for Health Equity for a student interested in gaining hands-on experience in cancer epidemiology and cancer survivorship research.
The research team studies the long-term effects of cancer treatment, including cardiovascular disease, treatment-related cardiotoxicity, and subsequent cancers. Research also explores opportunities for risk stratification and long-term cardiovascular surveillance, as well as disparities in health outcomes among cancer survivors.
The Research Intern will work closely with an experienced research mentor and gain practical exposure to epidemiologic research focused on the long-term effects of treatment among cancer survivors.
This internship is designed as a structured educational experience that will provide opportunities to:
Internship Activities & Timeline
The internship will provide structured mentorship and progressively independent research experience throughout the appointment.
During the first two weeks, the intern will receive an orientation to the department and the research process within an academic research environment. The intern and research mentor will establish an individualized timeline, mentoring plan, and learning goals for the internship. During the following one to two months, the intern will primarily focus on targeted literature reviews related to cancer epidemiology, survivorship, treatment-related cardiotoxicity, and long-term outcomes.
For the remainder of the internship, activities will expand to include statistical programming, foundational epidemiologic analyses, scientific writing, and development of presentation skills. The experience will culminate in the preparation of a scientific manuscript and/or research poster.
The intern will meet with their research mentor weekly to review progress, receive guidance, and support continued development. Progress will also be assessed periodically based on completion of internship goals, demonstrated growth in research knowledge and skills, and increasing independence over the course of the experience.
A 12-month commitment to research-related activities is preferred.
This is a hybrid internship requiring at least 8 hours per week on-site. Weekly mentoring meetings will be conducted in person.
On-site activities may include literature reviews, statistical programming, epidemiologic analyses, research collaboration, and presentation development. Remote activities may include literature reviews, scientific writing, and limited data analysis.
This internship offers a structured opportunity for students interested in cancer epidemiology, survivorship, health equity, and academic research to develop foundational research skills while contributing to meaningful work focused on improving long-term outcomes for cancer survivors.
