About the Human Biology Facility

The Human Biology Facility supports Crick researchers to conduct high-quality research involving human samples and data. We provide expertise across the full study lifecycle – from sourcing materials and navigating governance frameworks to ensuring compliance and managing samples.

Working with scientists, clinicians and external partners, the team enables responsible and compliant research involving human tissues, data and participants. Through governance advice and operational support for receiving and tracking samples, the facility helps ensure research meets ethical and regulatory standards.

About the role

We are seeking a Research Governance Officer to join the Human Biology Facility and support the governance and compliance processes that underpin human research at the Crick.

In this role, you will work closely with research groups to ensure studies involving human samples and data meet the required ethical and regulatory standards, including the Human Tissue Act and Health Research Authority approvals.

You will help guide researchers through governance processes, support monitoring of active studies and contribute to improving our processes as the team continues to evolve. This is an opportunity to play an important role in enabling world-leading biomedical research while maintaining the highest standards of research integrity and compliance.

What you’ll be doing

You will be responsible for:

• Coordinating the process to register and approve research involving human materials at the Crick, including managing applications, coordinating reviews and issuing approvals.
• Supporting research groups throughout the lifecycle of their projects to ensure compliance with governance, ethical and regulatory requirements.
• Maintaining the register of human research projects, ensuring records are accurate and approvals remain current.
• Supporting the delivery of the human research audit programme, including preparation, documentation and follow-up actions.
• Assisting with the management of incidents and adverse events related to human research, coordinating reporting and corrective actions.
• Supporting the maintenance of governance processes and quality systems, including reporting on key activities and performance indicators.
• Working closely with the Human Tissue Governance Manager and Head of Human Research Governance to support compliance and assurance activities.

About you

You will have:

Essential:

(Minimum criteria*)

• A degree in a relevant discipline, or equivalent experience in a biomedical research environment.*
• Experience in research governance, ethics, compliance or related regulatory frameworks.*
• Understanding of requirements for research involving human participants, samples or data.*
• Strong communication skills and ability to work with researchers and professional services teams.
• Ability to analyse complex information and identify risks or compliance issues.
• Highly organised, with the ability to prioritise and work independently within a team environment.

Desirable

• Experience supporting ethics or regulatory submissions (e.g. HRA, REC or HTA).
• Familiarity with frameworks such as the Human Tissue Act, GDPR or Good Clinical Practice.
• Experience in a university, research institute, NHS research office or clinical trials setting.
