Research Associate / Senior Research Assistant / Research Assistant (25260730)

The Academy is seeking a full-time Research Associate / Senior Research Assistant / Research Assistant to join a GRF-funded maritime history project on the topic of children’s experiences of steamship travel. The position will primarily involve conducting independent research and retrieving, organising and preparing historical data for a digital history project.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct archival research using physical and digitised collections in Hong Kong;
  • Retrieve, organise, and plot historical data in preparation for a digital history project on children’s steamship journeys;
  • Assist with data management, including the organisation of digital files and the creation of a searchable data repository;
  • Assist with translations of historical documents from Chinese to English;
  • Compile bibliographies of relevant library materials and manage bibliographic data using Zotero; and
  • Support other duties as assigned by the Principal Investigator.

Requirements:

  • For the position of Senior Research Assistant: A master’s degree or above in History or a related discipline; applicants with a doctoral degree or relevant qualifications may be considered for a Research Associate position;
  • For the position of Research Assistant: A bachelor’s degree or above in History or a related discipline;
  • Demonstrated proficiency in conducting independent historical research using physical and digitised repositories;
  • Experience of working on digital humanities projects. Knowledge and experience of ArcGIS, ArcGIS Storymaps, and using Google Maps for digital humanities work will be an advantage;
  • Curiosity about maritime history, the history of childhood, and global history;
  • Good analytical, communication, organisational and problem-solving skills; and
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English and written Chinese. Knowledge of other Asian languages would be an advantage.

The initial appointment will be offered on a contract of 6 months starting between June and early September 2026.Re-appointment thereafter will be subject to mutual agreement.

Salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
