ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The Research Associate leads structural biology and protein biochemistry efforts to support structure‑guided antibacterial drug discovery in the Hevener laboratory. This position is responsible for recombinant protein production, biophysical and enzymatic characterization, macromolecular crystallography, and integration of structural insights with medicinal chemistry and microbiology collaborators in support of NIH-funded research programs.
- Conducts independent and collaborative research activities in protein biochemistry and structural biology in support of funded laboratory research programs.
- Performs molecular cloning, recombinant protein expression, purification, and quality control using standard and specialized biochemical techniques.
- Carries out enzymatic, biophysical, and binding assays to characterize protein function and protein–ligand interactions.
- Executes macromolecular crystallography workflows including crystallization, diffraction data collection, structure determination, refinement, and validation.
- Analyzes and interprets experimental data and integrates results with ongoing multidisciplinary research efforts.
- Prepares figures, summaries, and written documentation for internal reports, manuscripts, and grant‑related materials.
- Provides technical instruction and day‑to‑day guidance to students and trainees in laboratory methods as appropriate.
- Maintains laboratory records, research data, and experimental documentation in accordance with institutional and sponsor requirements.
- Performs other duties as required.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION: Doctoral Degree in Protein Biochemistry, Structural Biology, or a closely related discipline. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)
EXPERIENCE: Three (3) years of research experience. Must have completed three (3) years as a Postdoctoral Scholar. Experience with remote data collection.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge in macromolecular x-ray crystallography.
- Expertise in protein expression and purification, and molecular cloning.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
WORK SCHEDULE: This position may occasionally be required to work weekends and evenings.
