Under the supervision of Professor Rod Guthrie, the Department of Mining and Materials Engineering is seeking a highly motivated and skilled Research Associate to contribute to an advanced research project focused on microbubble generation for removing deleterious inclusions from molten metals. The incumbent will play an active role in advancing the research objectives of the project, contributing to knowledge dissemination through scholarly publications, and supporting the broader research mission of the McGill Metals Processing Centre.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The tasks of this position include but are not limited to the following:
Develops and conducts research projects examining microbubble generation and inclusion behaviour in molten metal systems, integrating experimental and theoretical approaches.
Establishes the design and development of research methodologies, including advanced characterization and analysis using techniques such as computed tomography (CT), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), optical microscopy, and LiMCA measurements.
Plans and leads experimental investigations and associated research activities, including the generation, collection, and curation of high-quality datasets.
Develops and implements modelling approaches, including computational fluid dynamics using tools such as ANSYS Fluent, to support the interpretation of metallurgical phenomena.
Leads the analysis and interpretation of research data and disseminates findings through scholarly publications and research reports.
Writes theoretical and methodological contributions, including peer-reviewed articles, contributing to ongoing academic discourse in process metallurgy.
Contributes to the preparation and writing of grant applications to support ongoing and future research initiatives.
Ensures the quality and integrity of research outputs, maintaining rigorous academic and ethical standards across all activities.
Organizes, supports, and verifies the work of research trainees and assistants, contributing to their guidance and development within the research program.
Performs administrative and coordination tasks related to the effective execution of the research project.
Maintains compliance with established laboratory practices, safety protocols, and institutional research standards.
QUALIFICATIONS:
PhD in Materials Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
Minimum of five (5) years of relevant research experience in steelmaking or metallurgical processing
Experience with advanced characterization techniques (e.g., SEM, CT, optical microscopy, LiMCA) and modelling tools (e.g., ANSYS Fluent)
Strong analytical skills and experience working with complex datasets
Excellent communication and collaboration abilities with the ability to present complex research findings clearly to both academic and industry audiences.
Strong academic research writing skills, with experience preparing scientific reports and contributing to peer-reviewed publications.
Excellent organizational and time management abilities, especially in managing multiple experimental workflows and data sets.
Collaborative mindset and experience working in multidisciplinary research environments, with the ability to contribute to team-based projects and publications.
