Under the supervision of Professor Sidney Omelon, the Department of Mining and Materials Engineering is seeking a highly motivated and skilled Research Associate to support a research project focused on materials characterization. The successful candidate will contribute to the advancement of research activities through the stewardship of shared research facilities, support experimental workflows, and train students in laboratory methodologies and data interpretation.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The tasks of this position include but are not limited to th e following:
Develops and conducts research activities related to materials characterization, including the use of powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy, under the direction of the Research Supervisor
Establishes the design and development of experimental methods, data collection strategies, and analytical approaches for materials characterization and interpretation of results
Plans and leads laboratory-based research activities, including the preparation and execution of experiments, organization of research workflows, and training of undergraduate students in experimental techniques and protocols
Develops and implements improved methodologies for data acquisition, instrument use, and materials analysis to support ongoing research objectives
Leads the analysis and interpretation of research data and disseminates results through internal reports and contributions to scholarly outputs
Writes theoretical or methodological reports, technical documentation, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and research-related materials
Organizes, distributes, and verifies research-related tasks, including overseeing student contributions and ensuring quality and consistency of experimental work
Performs various administrative tasks related to the research project, including coordination of equipment use, implementation of tracking/billing systems, and maintenance of research records
QUALIFICATIONS:
PhD in Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
Minimum of five (5) years of research experience in materials characterization techniques, including powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy
Strong analytical skills and experience working with complex datasets
Excellent communication and collaboration abilities with the ability to present complex research findings clearly to both academic and industry audiences.
Strong academic research writing skills, with experience preparing scientific reports and contributing to peer-reviewed publications.
Excellent organizational and time management abilities, especially in managing multiple experimental workflows and data sets.
Collaborative mindset and experience working in multidisciplinary research environments, with the ability to contribute to team-based projects and publications.
