Job Description

POSITION OBJECTIVE

Working under moderate supervision, perform research work and will be responsible for planning and execution of experiments in close collaboration and discussion with the Principal Investigator. The lab is working closely together with other PI's in Pathology and School of Medicine including collaborations with a multidisciplinary team of biologists, chemists, physicists and clinicians at CWRU, and neighboring institutes. The qualified candidate will also prepare manuscripts and contribute preliminary data, background and significance and experimental aims design for grant proposals for the lab.

The focus of the current position is Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Goal is to discover novel molecular mechanisms that could be targeted to develop new therapeutic approaches. Regulation of cellular signaling by hexosamine biosynthetic pathway, O-GlcNAcylation and NF-kB transcription pathways are key areas of attention. The work will involve experimental techniques ranging from basic cell and molecular biology, immunology, biochemistry to cell culture, animal studies, and patient samples. Experience with mouse models and flow cytometry is required. The candidate will work independently and should be able to read the literature, assist with designing and planning of projects, and carry out research on the assigned project.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Perform research work in medical, biological and related technical areas involving use of lab skills. Design, plan and carry out experiments in collaboration with PI. Provide assistance and work closely with staff, post-doctoral scholars and graduate students ensuring projects are being completed according to the research plan. Advise/Assist in developing improved techniques, project methods, or procedures. (60%)

2. Conduct analysis of data, ensure rigor and reproducibility, record results for a particular experiment or closely related series of experiments, present data in one on one meeting with the PI and lab meetings. (20%)

3. Maintain detailed records of experiments with all necessary documents to reproduce the study in electronic and/or hard copy lab notebook. (10%)

4. Laboratory supplies- check and request PI to order necessary items. Organize lab inventory and Maintain equipment utilized in experiments. (5%)

NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Perform other duties connected with the research and overall lab management as assigned. (≤5%).

CONTACTS

Department: Almost daily contact with supervisor, either in person or through electronic media to discuss research and maintain workflow

Students: Contact with student and postdoc employees to exchange information

University: Occasional contact with members of other departments, animal facility, clinical staff and administrators to share to support research activities

External: Limited contact with vendors to exchange information necessary for purchase and protocol details

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

This position has no direct supervision of staff employees. However, RA may train research personnel such as undergrads, masters, postbacs, and grad students. Should provide support to students and postdocs as and when instructed by the PI or upon direct request from the students.

WORKING CONDITIONS

General laboratory environment. Involves long time standing or sitting, up and down stairs, moderate weight lifting involving equipment and supplies. Working in dark environment for light sensitive experiments. Work will be done at regular lab as well as in the mouse facility. May have exposure to chemical and biohazards after completing safety training and approval. Work hours will depend on the type of experiments and may involve early start, late finish and working on weekends and holidays as required for any high quality competitive research. May involve local travel for sample collection and collaborative work.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

Ph.D in biological sciences with hands-on experience in Immunology, Biochemistry, Cell Biology and mouse work. Leukemia research skills desired.

1. Has knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within the field of oncology, immunology, biochemistry.

2. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job and shows ability to come up with novel ideas and directions to strengthen the project.

3. Ability to operate all the common laboratory equipment.

4. Ability to meet consistent attendance.

5. Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors and customers face to face.

6. Effective oral and written communication skills.

7. Good organization skills; ability to multi-task, prioritize and meet deadlines. Must demonstrate attention to detail and accuracy and follow-through on assigned tasks.

8. Ability to work with sensitive information and maintain confidentiality.

9. Good problem-solving skills; must demonstrate good analytical skills, sound judgment and good decision-making.

10. Familiarity with policies and procedures of lab and adhere to chemical and biological safety and manage them.

11. Perform/supervise rodent husbandry including breeding, genotyping and maintain an accurate animal database.

12. Compliance with policies, procedures and regulations of the Animal Resource Center, IACUC, Animal Welfare Act, Public Health Service Policy, AAALAC guidelines and other applicable regulatory guidelines for which essential training will be provided.
