Founded in 1946, the Middle East Institute is the oldest Washington-based institution dedicated solely to the study of the Middle East. It is a non-partisan think tank providing expert policy analysis, educational and professional development services, and a hub for engaging with the region's arts and culture.

Position Title: Research Assistant

Reports to: Vice President, Policy Center

Status: Full-Time, Salaried, Non-Exempt

Location: On-Site | Washington, DC

Salary Range: $50,000-$55,000

About the role

The Middle East Institute, Washington’s oldest think tank devoted to the study of the region, seeks a Research Assistant to support the Policy Center’s programming and operations. The Research Assistant is a critical role within the MEI Policy Center, dedicated to supporting various research projects of MEI scholars, as well as managing logistics and administrative tasks.

The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented and highly organized individual with a strong background in research, analysis, writing methodologies, and data analysis, as well as a demonstrated interest in the Middle East. They should be an excellent communicator with the ability to manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and contribute to the success of research projects. Attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining high standards of accuracy and integrity will be key.

What you'll do

  • Perform comprehensive literature reviews to gather relevant information.
  • Stay updated on recent advancements, trends, and news in the relevant research field.
  • Research specific topics as requested by the relevant scholars, and assist with fact-checking, editing, and formatting for the scholars’ writing projects, which may include op-eds, essays, journal articles, and book chapters.
  • Maintain detailed and organized records of research activities and materials, as well as collaborate with team members and other departments to ensure smooth execution of research projects.
  • Assist with the preparation of ethics submissions and ensure compliance with institutional and regulatory guidelines.
  • Provide administrative support to the scholar(s), including managing travel, coordinating with external organizations, handling correspondence, and responding to requests for information.
  • Plan and organize events, including preparing invitations, making travel arrangements, corresponding with speakers and presiders, preparing background papers, and providing other logistical support.
  • Provide support across departmental lines and for other scholars, upon request.
  • Participate in team meetings, seminars, and training sessions as required.
  • Assist scholars with social media outreach as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Middle East studies, international affairs, political science, or a related field is required (Master’s degree preferred).
  • Previous research experience in policy research, ideally in an academic or professional setting.
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively in a team.
  • Strong time management and ability to prioritize tasks.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in record-keeping.
  • Proficiency in data analysis software (e.g., Python, Stata, Excel) and research tools.
  • Proficiency in Arabic is preferred.
