A Research Assistant position is available in the Division of Gastroenterology at Boston Children's Hospital in the lab of Dr. Lauren Collen / Dr. Scott Snapper. This position is ideal for candidates interested in translational gastroenterology research. The research assistant will work as part of a team of scientists and clinicians who focus on the molecular mechanisms of very early onset inflammatory bowel disease.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Direct involvement in an independent science project and assisting other laboratory members as needed.
  • Under general supervision, performing a variety of routine and specialized laboratory tests, specimen preparations and experimental procedures for the purpose of research.
  • Cell culture, cell sorting, cytokine stimulation, flow cytometry, and cellular assays in close collaboration with Dr. Collen.
  • RNA extraction and library preparation for RNA sequencing.
  • Participating in laboratory meetings and presentations.
  • Maintaining records of results and methodologies in a log of work performed. Maintaining equipment, lab area and supplies in a neat professional manner. Sterilizing and cleaning glassware, preparing media and other materials using appropriate procedures.
  • Medical record review for extraction of clinical details tied to experimental samples.
  • Opportunity to participate in recruitment of patients for clinical studies, if desired.


Minimum Qualifications
Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Life Science, Chemistry or a closely related field is required.

Experience:

  • Practical lab experience is preferred.
  • The analytical skills to resolve problems that require the use of basic scientific, mathematical, or technical principles.
  • Experience in one or more of these experimental techniques: cell culture, PCR, western blot, flow cytometry.
  • Strong organizational skills will be an asset.
  • Strong communication skills.
