Project Context and Scope
Bangladesh is among the countries most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, facing increasing climate-induced hazards such as river erosion, floods, cyclones, salinity intrusion, droughts, and tidal surges. These hazards contribute to human mobility in the form of migration and displacement while posing significant challenges to public health, livelihoods, climate adaptation, and sustainable development.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) Bangladesh is implementing a portfolio of research and technical initiatives to strengthen the evidence base on climate mobility and support policy development, national planning processes, and stakeholder engagement. As part of this initiative, IOM will undertake the following research and technical assignments:
Assessment of the implications of Bangladesh's graduation from Least Developed Country (LDC) status on its climate change response and capacities with a focus on managing displacement and climate mobility.
Research on the impact of climate migration and displacement on health, with particular emphasis on gender-differentiated impacts.
Mapping of diaspora associations in European Union (EU) Member States with roots in selected project-supported countries to identify opportunities for diaspora engagement in climate resilience and sustainable development.
Piloting the Technical Guide "Addressing Human Mobility Related Challenges and Opportunities in the Context of Climate Change: A Supplement to the UNFCCC National Adaptation Plan (NAP) Technical Guidelines" developed by the WIM ExCom through analysis of Bangladesh's National Adaptation Plan (NAP) and formulation of an implementation framework for integrating climate mobility into national climate planning processes.and Technical guide on accessing financial resources aiming to avert, minimize and address the impacts of displacement with the adverse effects of change

Established in 1951, the International Organization for Migration is the leading intergovernmental organization in the field of migration and is committed to the principle that humane and orderly migration benefits migrants and society.
IOM works with its partners in the international community to assist in meeting the growing operational challenges of migration, advance understanding of migration issues, encourage social and economic development through migration and uphold the well-being and human rights of migrants.
More people are on the move today than at any other time in recorded history: 1 billion people – comprising a seventh of humanity. A variety of elements – not least the information and communications revolutions – contribute to the movement of people on such a large scale. The forces driving migration as a priority issue are: climate change, natural and manmade catastrophes, conflict, the demographic trends of an ageing industrialized population, an exponentially expanding jobless youth population in the developing world and widening North–South social and economic disparities.
