Department Overview

The Research Assistant 2 will provide both scientific and laboratory management support for the Cohen Lab in the Department of Chemical Physiology and Biochemistry.

Function/Duties of Position

Scientific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, mammalian cell culture maintenance, rodent handling, bacterial protein expression, buffer preparation, and molecular cloning. The individual will also be assigned an independent research project focused on investigating the interplay between ADP-ribosylation and ubiquitylation. This project is a collaborative effort between the Cohen and Pruneda laboratories.

  • Scientific support for research projects, including bacterial protein expression, mammalian cell culture maintenance, buffer preparation, and molecular cloning.
  • Lab management support, including ordering reagents/supplies, organizing reagents/supplies, and maintaining lab stocks.
  • This position description is not intended to be all inclusive, and additional responsibilities will be assigned by the supervising PI.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's in relevant field; OR

  • Associate's AND 3 years of relevant experience; OR

  • 4 years of relevant experience; OR

  • Equivalent combination of training and experience.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, in both written and oral formats.

  • Ability to work both independently and with others in a positive and productive manner.

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point.

  • High level of self-motivation and integrity.

  • Organizational skills and careful attention to details to satisfactorily perform job duties.

  • Ability to prioritize work assignments and cordially coordinate use of research equipment and laboratory space with other staff.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Biology or related field.
  • Undergraduate research (>2 years) as well as substantive postbac research experience (1+ years).
  • General knowledge in biochemistry, molecular biology, protein expression, cloning, mammalian cell culture.

  • Experience with proteomics.

  • Experience with making laboratory solutions and keeping experimental records.

  • Experience with lab management.

Additional Details

This position is located at the OHSU Marquam Hill campus in Portland, Oregon. Working hours may vary, but are primarily Monday-Friday, 8:30am-5:00pm with occasional after hour and weekend work required depending on the needs of the research. Exact schedule will be determined by the supervising PI. Position will work with recombinant DNA, mammalian cell culture, and bacteria. Work environment is an open lab, with many lab benches, people, noises and distractions.
