Job Description

RMIT Vietnam is seeking a contingent worker for the Research Assistant role. While the position is advertised by RMIT Vietnam, the successful candidate will be employed and managed by an external service provider, who will be responsible for the labour contract.

The position of Research Assistant will support the Impact Starter Grant funding 2026 project “ Translating microbially derived carotenoid-rich oils into sustainable cosmetic bioactive”. This research explores the translation of carotenoid-rich microbial oils produced by oleaginous yeasts into sustainable cosmetic ingredients with dual functionality as natural colorants and antioxidant bioactives.

The project involves fermentation operation, physicochemical characterisation, stability testing, and evaluation of antioxidant performance to establish proof-of-concept for commercial application within the cosmetics industry. The Research Assistant will contribute to laboratory experiments, data collection and analysis.

Reports to: Chief Investigator of the project

Indirectly reports to: Associate Investigators of the project

Key Accountabilities

  • Conduct fermentation process to obtain microbial oils
  • Conduct analytical testing of physico-chemical and microbial properties of the resultant fermentation products
  • Collect samples to be sent to laboratories for further analysis
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of assigned research activities and findings.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety and ethical guidelines in conducting research.

Key Selection Criteria

  • Bachelor's degree in Applied Science (Food, Biology, Chemistry, Agriculture) or a related field (Master’s degree or Master’s student is desirable).
  • Previous experience in biotechnological research or related work to fermentation is preferred.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are preferred
  • Experience in analytical testing of food or biomaterials is desirable
  • Ability to work independently and proactively, and as part of a team.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for collaborating with team members.
  • Preferred skills include experience with statistical software and data analysis tools.
  • Ability to display appropriate behaviours in line with the position and RMIT Values.
