Research Assistant

An exciting opportunity is available for a Research Assistant to join the Personalised Oncology Division (Gibbs Laboratory) on a part time basis at Australia’s pre-eminent biomedical research institute.

About the Position
The role of the Research Assistant is to provide technical and operational support for the research in a Gibbs Laboratory, with a focus on optimising research productivity. Research Assistants enable and facilitate research, contributing skills and expertise to projects within the group and with external collaborators, under the general direction of the Clinical Research Fellows Dr Belinda Lee and Professor Ben Tran with cross functional reporting to the Senior Lab Manager. The role will support translational and real-world evidence research projects, with a particular focus on clinical and research data management, database development, data extraction from electronic medical records and clinical systems, and integration and validation of clinical, molecular, pathology, and laboratory datasets. The position may also contribute to laboratory and biospecimen-related activities supporting translational research projects

Selection Criteria

Essential Knowledge and Skills:

  • Undertake research support activities including data extraction, data management, analyses, and laboratory-based tasks as required across translational and real-world evidence research projects

  • Contribute to preparation of research outputs including reports, presentations, abstracts, and manuscripts where required

  • Assist with extraction, cleaning, validation, mapping, and integration of clinical, molecular, pathology, laboratory, and outcomes data from multiple research and clinical sources, including electronic medical records

  • Manage own continuing development of scientific, data management and technical skills; to support the research

  • Work effectively as part of the research team and support collaboration across clinical, laboratory, and data-focused projects- be reliable and approachable


Desirable Knowledge and Skills:

  • BSc with Honours or Masters in an appropriate area of study, or relevant experience

  • Demonstrated research experience working with clinical, laboratory, or research data in a biomedical or healthcare environment

  • Strong computer skills and ability to accurately record data, results and the development of new methods and theories

  • Project management, excellent oral and written communication and reporting skills

  • Experience with clinical registries, electronic medical records, or data extraction processes

  • Familiarity with data cleaning, validation, and database structure/mapping

  • Experience with scripting or analytical tools such as R, SQL, or Python

  • Laboratory research experience, including biospecimen handling or molecular techniques

  • Experience supporting digital research workflows, including collating and maintaining online research resources, databases, and website content, with interest in automation and process improvement

  • Good communication skills and the ability to work constructively within a team environment

  • Ability to work as part of a team using experimental protocols

  • Excellent attention to detail, ensuring that data, methods and theories are accurate, of high-quality and accessible to other researchers

  • Ability to manage time effectively and be reliable and approachable

  • Willing to take direction and have progress reviewed where required


Terms of Appointment
This position is available for 12 months in the first instance at 0.4 FTE. Salary is Research Support Employee Level 5 ($84,479 - $97,036). Very attractive salary packaging options are available for general living expenses, meal entertainment, novated leasing and more. 12% superannuation payable, plus up to a further 5% after the first 6 months of service via our matching superannuation scheme.
