As a Research AHT, you will monitor and care for the health and well-being of research animals. You will work in the Biological Research Unit (BRU), a primary rodent housing area consisting of 12 general holding rooms, a quarantine room and additional space used for specialized research requirements or studies. The facility currently houses approximately 8,000 cages and 40,000 mice. This position is critical to support the daily operations of the BRU rodent facility, which operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. In this role, you will support foundational pre-clinical research that may one day improve the lives of patients around the world. You will help care for the animals used in research studies by maintaining supplies, food and overall environmental conditions within the facility. Responsibilities include animal husbandry, daily cage changing, providing food and water, behavioral observations, writing health reports, basic colony management, stocking supplies, cleaning equipment and performing housekeeping duties such as sweeping, mopping, dusting and stocking PPE. Your work plays an important role in advancing scientific discovery and supporting the mission of Cleveland Clinic to enhance the global healthcare field.

A caregiver in this position works days/weekends from 6:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m., requiring one holiday per year. A caregiver in this role works either Sunday-Thursday or Tuesday-Saturday.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

  • Monitor and care for the health and well-being of research animals.

  • Perform daily health observations and monitor the condition of research animals.

  • Provide custodial care, fresh feed, and fresh water to animals according to the standard operating procedures.

  • Receive animal shipments and complete required documentation.

  • Ensure that areas used for technical procedures are well maintained and adequately supplied.

  • Transport supplies, equipment and animals to and from various locations.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • High School Diploma or GED

  • Able and willing to be trained to properly handle all species of animals housed within the department

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule and complete assigned responsibilities, as animal care is a 7-days-per-week, 365-days-per-year operation that may require weekend and holiday coverage

  • Critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision

  • Ability to make quick decisions, identify options and take appropriate action

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • Experience in the custodial care of animals

  • Comfortable handling small animals in an academic research setting

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and transport equipment and/or animals weighing up to 75 pounds using carts with casters.

  • Capable of tolerating a significant amount of standing, bending and walking.

  • May be required to work with biological, chemical and radiation hazards after proper training

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
