Are you an ambitious self-starter and collaborative team player who is passionate about local news and current events, excels at breaking news, and relishes the chance to be at the centre of the action?
CBC London is looking for an experienced reporter/editor to join our news team with a focus on creating compelling mobile-first video, live reporting, explainers and visual storytelling that gets you out into the community. We’re looking for a journalist who knows the issues in the London area and who thrives in the fast-paced, high-pressure world of a multiplatform newsroom.
The successful candidate will be expected to bring original ideas and treatments to their stories that will be produced on a daily basis. You will be expected to report for audio and visual platforms with speed and accuracy, demonstrating strong news judgment and great organizational and writing skills. You understand what works for social and streaming platforms and you have demonstrated skills in video and digital journalism.
In this role, you will help amplify the issues that matter to people in London and the surrounding region. You are curious and care about developing local contacts. You will make it your mission to seek out areas and people who are underrepresented in media coverage to help CBC London engage and grow our audience.
When it comes to the audience, you always ask what they need from your reporting, and you think about how they consume media. You ensure that your work highlights a broad range of perspectives, experiences and points of view, especially from those people who have been traditionally underrepresented in the media. You will be certain that all CBC journalistic standards are met and that our stories are fair, balanced, accurate, thoughtful, immediate and resonate with the communities we serve.
This position requires full-time, on-site presence in London. Flexibility to work a variety of shift times and days will be required.
Your responsibilities:
Pitch and chase original daily ideas that set the agenda in London.
Respond quickly to breaking news events – chasing, gathering, writing and packaging stories for all platforms (audio, video and digital).
Arrange for, travel to and conduct interviews across all platforms in the community.
Report live and breaking news, providing analysis and context to enhance the audience’s understanding of issues.
Experience determining potential legal issues and journalistic policy violations, and ability to act on them
Cultivate and develop working relationships with a large pool of sources and contacts in London.
Working closely with producers, reporters and hosts to develop and break stories, and coordinate coverage.
Your profile:
Demonstrated experience working in a fast-paced daily multiplatform news environment.
University degree in journalism or equivalent with a minimum of three years of recent, related experience.
Sound news judgment and a proven track record of reacting quickly to breaking news and changing priorities, and chasing multiple stories at once.
Experience in reporting live and breaking news on broadcast platforms.
A proven work ethic, strong communication skills and a positive, team-first attitude.
Superior writing and vetting skills across platforms.
Excellent critical thinking skills, including knowledge of and familiarity with CBC journalistic standards as well as the legal and ethical issues related to journalism.
Knowledge of and an interest in emerging storytelling formats and a willingness to embrace change and new tasks across all CBC platforms (audio, video, digital).
A strong desire to live and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work culture.
A strong proven connection to the communities we serve in London, and a deep and nuanced understanding and appreciation of diverse perspectives and lived experiences.
Possession of a valid driver’s licence and a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio-Canada's insurance company.
Ability and willingness to work flexible hours as required.
Please include a link to your website or links to samples of your work in your cover letter.
Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.
We thank all applicants for their interest, but only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.
As part of our recruitment process, candidates who advance to the next
step will be asked to complete a background check. This includes:
