Job Description

The Boston Globe is hiring an experienced reporter to focus on Vermont and northern New England, with a focus on stories related to the northern border.

They should have a digital-first mindset, strong reporting and writing skills, an understanding of SEO, a hearty appetite for news and, ideally, a passion for and knowledge of Vermont.

The ideal candidate should possess a high metabolism and strong initiative. They should be curious, creative, and enterprising, willing to explore angles, ask questions, and connect with sources for ideas to pitch every day. They should be able to confirm information and write quickly for publication online, and work well as part of a driven, innovative team.

Responsibilities:

  • Report and write news and feature stories each day on topics including immigration, border issues, the environment and politics
  • Distill complex subjects, reports, and data into readable articles on tight deadlines
  • Digitally produce these stories for publication on bostonglobe.com and help promote them on social media.
  • Cooperate and collaborate with the rest of the Globe team in covering breaking news events and on enterprise projects
  • Monitor analytics and metrics to surface trends and hone our coverage of Rhode Island news.

Qualifications:

  • At least 3-5 years experience as a journalist at a major market or publication
  • Ability to write clean, compelling copy on tight deadlines
  • Appetite for writing stories on a variety of topics each day
  • Ability to write deeply reported enterprise stories
  • Digitally savvy and familiar with audience analytics
  • Curious, creative, and eager to explore
  • An eye for good stories that transcend location
  • Multimedia experience – especially in audio, video, and social media-based storytelling – is a plus
  • A willingness to adapt and be audience focused, with a curious mindset and a commitment to creating an inclusive work environment

The hourly rate for this role is $38.41 - $61.53.

This position is a union position covered by a collective bargaining agreement with the Boston Newspaper Guild.
