Job Description

Reporter - Ipswich Star

Application Deadline: 14 August 2026

Department: Editorial

Employment Type: Permanent - Full Time

Location: Ipswich

Reporting To: Anna Starnes

The Ipswich Star is looking for a reporter to join our busy Ipswich newsroom and work alongside our sister title, the East Anglia Daily Times.

This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated journalist at the start of their career to make a real impact on a lively patch. You will be responsible for finding exclusive stories across Suffolk, covering council meetings and courts, and writing engaging features that matter to our readers.

This is a hybrid role at our Ipswich office. A full UK driving licence is highly desirable, as you will be expected to get out on patch to meet contacts, attend events and respond quickly to breaking news.

Key Responsibilities

  • Generating exclusive stories and strong off-diary content.
  • Covering council meetings, courts and other key civic institutions.
  • Writing clean, accurate and engaging copy to deadline.
  • Building contacts and relationships across Suffolk.
  • Contributing ideas for features, campaigns and digital coverage.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

  • NCTJ qualification (or equivalent) is essential.
  • 100wpm shorthand is strongly preferred; if you do not yet have shorthand, you must be willing to train towards it.
  • Strong news sense and a passion for local journalism.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Confidence in attending court and council, or a willingness to learn.
  • Full UK driving licence preferred.
This role is a hybrid mix of working from home, going out on patch and coming to the office in Ipswich, working closely with an experienced team and with the chance for your work to appear across our titles.

To apply, please send your CV and a brief cover letter explaining why you’re the right person for this role.

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, so early applications are encouraged.

Benefits

  • 25 days holiday + bank holidays + your birthday off
  • Holiday buy scheme for extra flexibility

  • Employee Helpline counselling and advice
  • Perks & discounts including:
