The Republican Herald in Pottsville, Pa., is looking for a full-time news reporter with a proactive approach to crime and breaking news coverage. This role requires a knack for balancing fast-paced daily news with in-depth enterprise work, alongside the confidence to ask difficult questions in high-pressure environments.

Candidates must reside in or relocate to Pottsville, PA

What you will do:

• Be fast and accurate, always striving to provide readers with what we know, when we know it

• Maintain transparency about sources of information

• Employ creativity every day to conceive of stories, produce or secure visuals, get sources to cooperate, corroborate facts and present information to readers in the most relevant, interesting way

• Priotize being digitally focused, maximizing audience engagement through our website for breaking news

• Create news and features content that is strong on grammar, punctuation, clarity and accuracy

• Take the initiative to fact-check, run background checks and confirm information before publication

• Cultivate beats, where appropriate, and sources

• Social media audience engagement on multiple platforms

What you will bring:

• Degree in journalism, communication or equivalent experience

• 1–3 years of experience at a daily newspaper or online news outlet preferred, though candidates with a strong college portfolio are welcome

• Relevant experience in news reporting and writing, using social media, creating enterprising content

• Capacity to work well under deadline pressure

• Understanding of the distinct demands of emerging and existing platforms, including web, mobile, and print

• Professional-level grasp of proper grammar, spelling, punctuation

• Ability to write accurately on deadline and to multitask and perform in a fast-paced deadline driven environment

Conditions of Employment:

• A full pre-employment background check and MVR will be conducted as part of the selection process. Must be willing to submit and pass the necessary required checks

• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and have reliable transportation

• Travel – This position entails occasional driving for work assignments, in-person training sessions and/or meetings. The employee will be responsible for transporting themselves between different sites as needed

• Must be available for shift work. May be required to work various hours for coverage outside of normal business hours
