Job Description

POSITION: Reported Time - Deaf Mentor (non-benefitted position)

LOCATION: Statewide Programs for Deaf and Hard of Hearing

REPORTS TO: Designated Administrator(s)

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Previous experience in teaching language to families of children who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing or previous successful experience in being a Deaf Mentor may be sufficient for candidates who do not possess a Bachelor's degree.
  • Must be a person who is Deaf or Hard of Hearing.
  • Ability to support families from a wide variety of backgrounds, cultural and ethnic groups.
  • Effective interpersonal skills in both written and receptive/expressive communications.
  • Ability to use an interactive data management system.
  • Work independently and productively and willing to accept supervision and constructive feedback.
  • Maintain standards of confidentiality.

Salary: Reported Time Salary Schedule

Responsibilities

  • This position is responsible for demonstrating and teaching natural communication and language strategies under the supervision of a highly experienced Early Intervention Provider
  • Teach communication strategies to parents/guardians and family members in home-based, family-centered home visits that take place on a weekly or bi-weekly basis
  • Share their experiences growing up as a Deaf or Hard of Hearing person
  • Support families in making connections within the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community in order to foster a positive self-identity for their children
  • Share their career and work experiences
  • Focus on five areas during home visits: Language/communication, making the child's world accessible, Deaf culture, literacy and building community for the child and family
