Position Purpose

Under general supervision, perform semi-skilled jobs in a variety of trade areas. Employee replaces parts, makes minor adjustments to machinery, and repairs buildings, equipment and miscellaneous articles. Employee also performs the installation, maintenance and repair of locks, doors, and hardware; opening of locks on doors and safes, changing of lock combinations, resolving immediate operational and or safety concerns, assisting other skilled trades, and ensuring that tools and materials are available at jobsite, also perform demolition on certain projects and assist with snow removal. Research parts and materials for purchase. Helps maintain attic stock. Work is done in accordance with established procedures, and frequent and detailed instructions are given on new or complex work. This position combines groundskeeping and repair and maintain of campus grounds equipment, campus vehicles and related power components.

Position Responsibilities

  • Performs general maintenance and repair of campus buildings, equipment, and grounds, including minor plumbing, electrical, carpentry, flooring, ceiling, door hardware, and equipment repairs. Diagnoses equipment and system issues, plans and documents repair work, and completes work orders with follow-up to ensure quality and customer satisfaction. Assists supervisors, licensed trades, and the Facilities Electrician on construction, renovation, and major maintenance projects, including painting, drywall and plaster repair, tile installation, concrete work, and demolition. Installs, assembles, moves, and refurbishes furniture and campus equipment to support daily operations. Maintains grounds, athletic fields, sidewalks, parking lots, and outdoor spaces; performs snow removal; supports campus event setup and teardown; conducts preventative maintenance; orders parts and schedules major repairs; reports facility deficiencies; and responds to emergency and after-hours maintenance needs to ensure safe, efficient campus operations.

  • Office, classroom, and event setup and teardown responsibilities include installing and removing equipment such as staging, tables, chairs, podiums, and other furnishings; coordinating with administrative and staff personnel on special events requiring unique arrangements; promptly communicating issues to supervisors and event schedulers; preparing and executing detailed event plans; and ensuring compliance with insurance, legal, and safety requirements. Duties also encompass campus grounds repair and maintenance, including landscaping, storm water systems, rain gardens, parking lots, pervious pavements, athletic fields, plantings, trees, and snow removal.

  • Serve as an effective team member within the Facilities Management Division by supporting teamwork and complying with campus and division policies, procedures, and mission statements. Maintain professional working relationships and clear communication with supervisors, coworkers, vendors, staff, faculty, and administration. Comply with Occupational Safety and Health Act requirements and complete all required training, testing, and certifications. Participate in working group meetings, provide constructive input to improve safety and operations, and collaborate to complete projects and repairs efficiently to minimize downtime. Maintain a clean, safe work environment and shop, accurately create, complete, and close work orders, submit timely and accurate timesheets, and perform other duties as assigned.

Salary Range:

The salary range for this position is $27.24 - $31.35/hour

(DOQ – Salary Placement will be done at time of hire.)

Minimum Qualifications (must have at time of application)

  • Knowledge of general methods and practices of a variety of trade areas (e.g. mechanics, masonry, welding, electrical, plumbing and carpentry) sufficient to assist licensed trades workers and to repair machinery, tools, and facilities in a timely and safe manner.

  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety measures related to trades work sufficient to safely and efficiently perform the job duties.

  • Ability to safely use hand and power hand tools.

  • Ability to safely operate and maintain trucks, tractors, and other ground and road maintenance equipment.

  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

  • Ability to provide work instructions to unskilled helpers.

  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks such as lifting, carrying and bending.

  • Possession of a Minnesota State Driver’s License.

Preferred Qualification (desired but not expected to have to enter job)

  • Demonstrated ability to provide excellent customer service and build and maintain professional, respectful working relationships with a diverse campus community, including supervisors, coworkers, faculty, administration, students, vendors, and the general public.

  • Strong organizational, planning, and prioritization skills, with the ability to manage competing demands, work under pressure, and meet strict deadlines.

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, including proficiency with software applications used to prepare and edit emails and reports and maintain accurate documentation, such as preventive maintenance and repair records.

  • Working knowledge of Schlage lock sets and hardware, Von Duprin closers, and panic/exit devices, as well as an understanding of Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements related to facilities operations.

  • Experience working in a campus, municipal, or public-sector facilities environment, with familiarity in fleet maintenance, hydraulics, electrical systems, welding, and the ability to read technical manuals, diagrams, and service schematics.

  • Ability to develop work plans, estimate materials and supplies, and accurately document repairs and equipment needs.

  • Possession of a valid driver's license with a good driving record; skid-loader certification preferred.

  • Knowledge of landscaping, irrigation systems, and flower garden maintenance.

  • Physical ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds; walk or stand for extended periods; sit for prolonged periods while operating equipment; and perform strenuous manual labor, including shoveling, hauling, bending, pushing, pulling, and climbing ladders.

  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the mission of a community college.
