The Repair Supervisor position is responsible for overseeing the safe, efficient, and compliant repair of tank cars and other railroad cars. Depending on the facility, areas of responsibility may include mechanical repairs, blasting, painting, coatings, linings, valve work, and coil work. This role ensures all repairs meet AAR, DOT, and Company standards while exemplifying Union Tank Car’s Quality Policy and Responsible Care principles.

Primary Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Supervise hourly employees across all phases of railroad car repair to ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with applicable standards.
  • Interpret technical drawings and blueprints to ensure accurate and proper completion of repair work.
  • Ensure compliance with all AAR, DOT, FRA, and Company requirements throughout the repair process.
  • Inspect completed work to verify quality and conformance to regulatory and Company standards.
  • Maintain accountability for the quality of all repairs performed by direct reports.
  • Select, train, coach, motivate, and discipline assigned employees.
  • Monitor work in process and schedule personnel to meet established production schedules whenever possible.
  • Perform administrative responsibilities, including accurate labor reporting and material usage tracking.
  • Support continuous improvement by preventing errors and implementing departmental and personal quality initiatives.
  • Actively participate in and support quality programs and Responsible Care Management System initiatives.
  • Implement and enforce safety programs and SOPs, ensure hazardous conditions are corrected promptly, and work proactively to prevent employee injuries.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 3–5 years previous supervisory or leadership experience in a manufacturing, repair, or industrial environment.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, specifications, and regulatory documentation.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
  • High degree of accuracy, attention to detail, and accountability.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities in a production environment.
  • Vision correctable to 20/30 for inspection and quality assurance activities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in railroad, tank car repair, or regulated industrial operations.
  • Strong working knowledge of AAR, DOT, and FRA rules and regulatory requirements.
  • Understanding of tank car design, components, and applicable regulations.
  • Demonstrated experience implementing quality improvement or safety initiatives.

Work Environment & Schedule

  • Work is performed in an industrial railcar repair environment involves regular exposure to challenging physically demanding and environmental conditions.
  • Duties may be performed outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Exposure to dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, heat, and noise is common
  • Job requires moderate to heavy physical exertion, including lifting, climbing, working at heights, and working in confined spaces
  • Must be able to enter tank cars through 20‑inch manway openings
  • Manual dexterity and physical coordination required for tool and equipment operation
  • Potential exposure to hazardous materials due to leaks or spills
  • Must comply with all required personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety protocols
  • On-site work arrangement: 5 days a week, with the ability and availability to work overtime as operational needs require.

Pay Range:

67,500.00 - 82,500.00
