Our Science and Insights team is seeking four Remote Sensing Scientists to join the Vegetation Monitoring and Reporting and Regulatory and Landscape mapping teams.
Using satellite and aerial imagery, geospatial analysis and scientific methods, you will contribute to the development and maintenance of vegetation monitoring and regulatory mapping datasets, maps and reporting products. Working as part of a collaborative and geographically dispersed team, you will partner with scientists and technical specialists across NSW to deliver high-quality environmental information and continuously improve monitoring and reporting processes.
About You
You are expert in satellite and aerial image interpretation and will apply an understanding of landscape, land use and land management practices to identify and assess vegetation and landscape change. You are familiar with validating automated remote sensing products by using other images, captured from both satellites and aircraft. You can sustain intense mapping tasks for extended periods whilst maintaining Work Health Safety and Wellbeing awareness.
In this role, you will contribute to visual image analysis of landcover change and quality assurance as part of the delivery of statewide datasets and reporting products. You may support the improvement of analytical workflows, spatial databases and operational processes that underpin program delivery.
You will thrive as part of a geographically dispersed team that supports flexible working and promotes collaboration and knowledge sharing. Experience with Python, workflow automation or coding is well regarded, but not essential.

Science & Insights sits within the NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW), which works to protect the state’s environment and heritage while driving a sustainable future for NSW.

The division’s work is focused on building a strong evidence base, advancing innovation in how data is gathered and used, and translating complex scientific information into clear, actionable insights and advice. Through scientific rigour, partnerships and knowledge sharing, Science & Insights plays a critical role in protecting, restoring and strengthening the resilience of NSW’s environment for future generations.
