Job Description

Emergency RVT - Animal Emergency Clinic of Durham Region

Hourly Wage: $25.00–$35.00/hour, based on experience

Role Type: 18-month maternity leave coverage contract.

Are you an RVT looking for an emergency practice where your skills are valued, you have a supportive team around you, and you can still enjoy plenty of time away from work?

At Animal Emergency Clinic of Durham Region (AECDR), we are looking for an RVT to join our experienced and collaborative emergency team. We are proud of our supportive clinic culture and are always looking for ways to help our team continue to learn and grow.

Whether you have years of emergency experience or are an RVT looking to build your ER skills, we would love to hear from you!

About AECDR

AECDR has been proudly serving the Durham Region community since 1995. We are a 24/7 urgent care and emergency hospital providing care for cats and dogs, including emergencies, walk-ins, and referrals from family practices throughout the area.

Our 8,400 sq. ft. hospital is home to a team of over 30 veterinary professionals, including 6 full-time DVMs and 11 full-time RVTs. We have doctors on shift around the clock, so you’ll always have experienced veterinary support when you need it.

Why Join AECDR?

A supportive and collaborative team

We have created a clinic culture where people genuinely support each other. Our DVMs and RVTs work closely together, and we empower our RVTs to use their skills and knowledge to their fullest.

You’ll have the opportunity to be involved in patient care, anesthesia, diagnostics, treatment, monitoring and critical care while working alongside experienced veterinary professionals.

Excellent work-life balance

Emergency medicine doesn’t have to mean giving up your life outside of work. Our schedule is designed with work-life balance in mind.

Learning and mentorship

Our experienced DVMs and RVTs are always willing to share their knowledge and help each other grow. We have a strong culture of mentorship and continuous learning, making AECDR a great place to develop your emergency nursing skills.

We are also partnered with MapleTree Veterinary Diagnostics, providing access to Internal Medicine consultations, including ultrasound and endoscopy.

Advanced equipment and medicine

We are committed to providing our team with the tools and resources they need to deliver excellent patient care. We recently added a Bionet ICU oxygen therapy unit, designed to provide oxygen therapy for cats and medium-sized dogs.

What We’re Looking For

We are looking for an RVT who is:

  • Registered and in good standing with the appropriate provincial regulatory body
  • Passionate about patient care
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, or eager to learn
  • A strong communicator and team player
  • Interested in continuing to develop their emergency and critical care skills

Emergency experience is an asset, but we are happy to support RVTs who are looking to grow their ER skills.

Life in Whitby & Durham Region

AECDR is centrally located in Whitby, in the heart of Durham Region and just east of Toronto.

You’ll have the best of both worlds: easy access to Toronto for restaurants, entertainment and day trips, while enjoying the quieter pace and family-friendly feel of the Durham Region.

The area offers plenty of green space, waterfront trails, parks and beaches along Lake Ontario, while major highways make it easy to explore Ontario and beyond.

About VetStrategy

Being part of VetStrategy is about being part of something bigger – an ever-growing community, where we connect person-to-person and skill-to-need, united by a common purpose of healthy animals, happy owners. From our humble beginning in 2006 to the present day, we continue to make a difference in the lives of people who have dedicated themselves to this industry.

When VetStrategy co-founders Orin Litman and his wife, Dr. Michelle Cutler, decided to acquire McLean Animal Hospital in 2006, they focused on three promises – our Customer Promise of world-class veterinary care, delivered locally; our People Promise, to be a great place to work; and our Sustainability Promise to be a force for good for patients, people and our plant.

Keeping our three promises led VetStrategy to become the leading veterinary network in Canada, with veterinary practices, 24-hour emergency care, and specialty hospitals coast-to-coast. We have developed and refined a model for supporting our practices across the country.

What we do:

We care for those dedicated to caring for animals by creating a workplace where we focus on innovation, engagement, and teamwork.

We know the blood, sweat and tears that have gone into building each practice, and we don’t want to touch that – we truly embrace the uniqueness of each clinic. Our heritage first approach means we won’t change a clinic’s name, culture or heritage.

We understand the challenges our veterinary teams face and are committed to doing what’s right – for them, their clients, and their patients.

We care about the future of veterinary medicine. Everything we do comes back to ensuring that veterinarians have the time, support, and infrastructure to focus on responsible medicine and quality care.

We believe in empowering our support office and clinic staff and providing them opportunities to develop their skills and grow in their careers.
