Job Description


Working in a small team environment, the GI Motility RPN will be responsible for performing complex and invasive diagnostic procedures on patients. Testing includes both esophageal and anorectal procedures relating to gastrointestinal function. The GI Motility RPN will utilize the latest associated medical technology within the field of gastrointestinal motility.

Qualifications
• Successful completion of a diploma program for a Registered Practical Nurse
• A minimum of 2 years recent related nursing experience required
• Current registration with the Ontario College of Nurses
• Current BCLS/HCP certification required
• Demonstrated knowledge, sensitivity and expertise in the care of seniors and their families
• Gentle Persuasive Approach training preferred
• Previous gastrointestinal / endoscopy / surgical experience preferred
• Demonstrated ability to function to the full scope of practice per the College of Nurses of Ontario
• Strong communication skills (written and verbal) with patients / clients, families and other members of the health care team
• Demonstrated ability to set priorities and organize work in response to patient / client needs
• Demonstrated commitment to ongoing learning, professional development, and continuous quality improvement
• Basic skill level with computers, MS Word, data entry, and patient information systems

Responsibilities
• Performs a range of advanced gastrointestinal diagnostic procedures, including high‑resolution esophageal manometry, 24‑hour esophageal pH testing with and without impedance, 24- hour pH monitoring with and without impedance, Bernstein tests, high‑resolution anorectal manometry, and 48‑hour Bravo esophageal pH testing.
• Ensures accurate test setup, patient preparation, data acquisition, and documentation in accordance with established clinical protocols and quality standards.
• Provides comprehensive patient care throughout diagnostic testing, including obtaining relevant history, performing assessments, administering medications, and monitoring patient status before, during, and after procedures.
• Responds promptly and appropriately to patient needs, identifies and manages post‑procedure complications within scope of practice set by the College of Nurses of Ontario, and ensures safe, high‑quality care in accordance with clinical protocols and hospital policies and procedures.
• Communicates effectively with patients, families, physicians, and interdisciplinary team members to support safe, coordinated care.
• Provides clear explanations, education, and emotional support to patients and clients before, during, and after procedures. Maintains professional, respectful interactions with staff and contributes to a collaborative team environment that enhances patient experience and clinical outcomes.
• Identifies opportunities to enhance departmental quality and actively contributes to improvement initiatives and risk‑reduction strategies in collaboration with the manager and medical director.
• Participates in the development, revision, and implementation of departmental policies and procedures in alignment with the organization’s strategic plans.
• Monitors diagnostic and clinical equipment to ensure proper function and safety, performing routine preventative maintenance in accordance with departmental policies and manufacturer guidelines.
• Identifies equipment issues promptly, documents findings, and coordinates service or repairs as needed to maintain reliable operation and support high‑quality patient care.
