Job Description

Department: Pharmacy
Shift/schedule: Full Time (40 hrs/wk)

GENERAL SUMMARY

Works under the supervision of the Pharmacy Manager. The primary job function of the Registered Pharmacist is to distribute medications and supplies according to departmental procedures with the assistance of pharmacy technicians. Collaborates with physicians and other hospital staff on medication related matters. Educates patients and their families to optimize drug therapy.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

• High School Diploma or successful completion of an equivalent High School Exam Required

• Bachelor's degree in Pharmacy (5 year) is required

• Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm D) is also preferred

Licensure:

• Pharmacy(OH) license required

• Graduate Pharmacists may also be hired awaiting license

• BLS required (if assigned to Anticoagulation Clinic only)

Experience:

• Previous hospital experience preferred

JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES AND PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

The following is a summary of the major job duties of this job. Other duties may be performed, both major and minor, which are not mentioned below. Specific activities may change from time to time.

1. Compounds and dispenses medications and pharmaceutical supplies according to accepted standards of practice to fill written prescriptions issued by qualified prescribers.

2. Checks the accuracy and appropriateness of all medications dispensed.

3. Intervenes clinically with the physician when necessary and appropriate to optimize drug therapy.

4. Maintains accurate and appropriate patient profiling and charging records for all inpatient and non-inpatient medication orders.

5. Follows accepted standards of practice and adheres to federal, state, and local regulations, as well as the policies and procedures of SOMC and Pharmacy Services.

6. Serves as a drug information source for patients, physicians, nursing personnel, hospital staff, visitors and the community.

7. Assists the Director of Pharmacy with certain assigned reports or projects.

8. Maintains a level of professional competency and remains current in the field of pharmacy.

9. Assigns, teaches, supervises, and monitors the work of Pharmacy Technicians, students, interns and externs.

10. For clinical pharmacists, the pharmacist must serve as a preceptor for 2 students in a calendar year. (as it applies)

11. For clinical pharmacists, the pharmacist must present one clinical and one anticoagulation update in a calendar year. (as it applies)
