Job Description

Full-time 80 hours per pay period Monday-Friday 7:30-5:00 p.m.

Oncology nurses play a vital role in the cancer care team, often serving as a key point of contact and consistency for patients throughout their treatment journey. In this role, the nurse assists with administering chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and a variety of other infusion therapies, while closely monitoring patients’ vital signs and response to treatment. This position also involves preparing (mixing) medications as ordered, managing inventory, and ordering necessary supplies to ensure efficient clinic operations.

Beyond direct patient care, the Oncology Nurse works closely with physicians and other healthcare professionals to coordinate and deliver the highest quality of care. Oncology nurses are not only skilled clinicians but also compassionate advocates, educators, and collaborators who help guide patients through a complex and often emotional journey.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Adapt quickly to changing clinical situations and patient needs.
  • Provide a safe, supportive environment for patients undergoing cancer treatment.
  • Communicate effectively with patients to explain treatment plans and procedures
  • Share timely and accurate information with physicians and the care team
  • Collaborate closely with fellow nurses, providers, and clinic staff
  • Build trusting, long-term relationships with patients and their families
  • Pay close attention to detail and observe subtle changes in patient condition
  • Maintain a strong understanding of cancer treatments and current research
  • Advocate for patient needs, preferences, and overall well-being

Work Schedule:

  • Weekdays between 7:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
  • Schedule may vary slightly based on department needs

Education and Experience Required:

  • Graduate of an accredited Registered Nursing (RN) program with a valid and current RN license in the State of Minnesota.
  • Current BLS certification required or must be obtained within 90 days of hire.
  • Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) certification is preferred, but not required at time of hire.
  • 2-3 years of nursing experience preferred, particularly in oncology or infusion care
  • Experience with Venous Access Devices (VADs) and strong IV insertion/maintenance skills preferred.
  • Demonstrated commitment to patient education, safety and satisfaction.
  • Strong communication skills-both oral and written.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and professionally with physicians, patients and interdisciplinary team members.

Within three months of employment, the following Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) courses must be completed:

  • Fundamentals of Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Administration (must pass post-test before independently administering or mixing chemotherapy).
  • Safe Handling Basics
  • Cancer Basics
  • Complications of Vascular Access Devices (VAD) and Intravenous (IV) Therapy

The Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) certification is required within two years of hire. Upon successful completion of the OCN exam, the employee will be moved into the RN-OCN pay scale.

Certifications

Mankato Clinic will provide reimbursement for the following:

  • All required orientation and training courses listed above
  • Renewal of the Chemotherapy/Immunotherapy Certification (every 2 years)
  • OCN study materials to support preparation for the certification exam
  • OCN certification exam, upon successful completion.

Benefits & Compensation:

Base Pay Range: $32.85-$51.70 initial pay based on relevant work experience and certification.

Our clinic environment offers primarily daytime, weekday schedules, helping employees maintain consistency in their daily routines. All employees scheduled 60-80 hours per pay period are eligible for full benefits.
