About the Position

The Jail Registered Nurse (RN) is employed by Grand Itasca Clinic & Hospital and provides comprehensive nursing care to incarcerated individuals within the Itasca County Jail setting. This role ensures timely medical assessment, treatment, triage, and health education while maintaining compliance with regulatory standards, security protocols, and organizational policies. The RN works independently and in collaboration with custody staff, advanced practice providers, physicians, mental health professionals, and external healthcare partners to support safe, effective, and patient-centered care.

Here's what you'll do when you join us:

  • Provide nursing assessments, triage, and interventions for acute and chronic medical needs of incarcerated individuals.
  • Respond to medical emergencies and perform stabilizing care until higher-level care is available.
  • Administer medications safely and in accordance with prescribing guidelines and jail protocols.
  • Conduct intake screenings, including health assessments, mental health screenings, suicide risk evaluations, and communicable disease surveillance.
  • Coordinate and support offsite appointments, specialty care, and emergent transports as needed.
  • Maintain accurate, timely documentation in the electronic health record.
  • Communicate effectively with providers regarding changes in patient condition and clinical concerns.
  • Monitor chronic disease management plans, follow-up needs, and daily treatment requirements.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings and case reviews.
  • Ensure compliance with NCCHC, state, and federal standards for correctional healthcare.
  • Follow all jail safety and security protocols, including controlled medication management, sharps control, and patient movement procedures.
  • Collaborate with custody staff to support a safe clinical environment.
  • Participate in quality assurance, audits, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Provide health education to patients with medications, chronic conditions, and preventative care.
  • Promote trauma-informed, culturally responsive care tailored to the needs of the jail population.
  • Support mental health and substance use needs, including withdrawal monitoring and MAT program coordination if applicable.
  • Work collaboratively with medical, mental health, and custody staff.
  • Serve as a clinical resource within the jail setting.
  • Maintain professional boundaries and ethical nursing standards at all times.

If you have these qualifications, we'd love to chat:

  1. Current RN licensure in the state of Minnesota required
  2. Basic Life Support (BLS) or ability to attain certification within two months of employment and maintains certification
  3. Strong assessment, critical thinking, and triage skills
  4. Ability to work within a correctional environment and follow security procedures
  5. Experience in correctional, emergency, urgent care, or psychiatric nursing preferred
  6. Familiarity with NCCHC standards preferred
  7. Experience with substance use disorder treatment, including MAT preferred
  8. Strong de-escalation
