The Registered Nurse (RN) is a regulated health care professional who adheres to and models the Standards and Guidelines of the College of Nurses of Ontario; the SJHH mission, vision and values, policies and procedures; and applicable specialty standards. The RN provides patient/client-centered and evidence informed care to promote health and assess the need for the provision of care and the treatment of health conditions. The RN collaborates with the inter-professional team and assumes a leadership role in the delivering a full range of care and treatment to patient/clients including those with complex needs, high acuity and less predictable outcomes.

The Forensic Psychiatry Program is currently seeking a full-time, Registered Nurse to work in the Forensic Early Intervention Service (FEIS). FEIS works collaboratively with the Office of the Solicitor General to provide outpatient services (including assessment and consultation) for selected inmates at the Hamilton-Wentworth Detention Centre (HWDC). Services will be provided for inmates on remand who are suspected of experiencing a major mental illness and who may be at risk of being unfit for trial, may need forensic mental health intervention to remain Fit to Stand Trial or are awaiting admission at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton’s Forensic Psychiatry Program. Working with clients who are on remand within a correctional institution requires strong clinical engagement skills and a thorough knowledge of risk management and recovery principles. You will work collaboratively with correctional staff. You will complete in-custody assessments, liaise with community service providers to coordinate care and inform treatment and discharge planning. You will be able to work with clients from diverse populations; contribute to program development; provide educational support and supervision to students; and participate in the research activities of the program.

FEIS operates within the Hamilton-Wentworth Detention Centre located at 165 Barton St., Hamilton, ON. Access to a vehicle is required as the position may require travel between the HWDC and the West 5th site.

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario required
• Current BCLS/HCP certification required
• RNAO, CNA or other professional association membership preferred
• Minimum 3 years of recent related clinical experience working with forensic psychiatry population
• CPI – Crisis Prevention Training (or successful completion as part of clinical orientation) required
• Strong clinical assessment skills required.
• Demonstrated knowledge of risk management, recovery principles, and trauma-informed care
• Demonstrated ability to utilize principles of knowledge transfer to facilitate practice change & implementation of best practices
• Comprehensive knowledge of community resources and health care delivery systems in acute and community settings
• Demonstrated knowledge, sensitivity and expertise in the care of patients and their families
• Demonstrated ability to respond to clients and situations with flexibility and adaptability
• Demonstrated knowledge and practice of safe and secure environment for clients/families/teams by listening, discussing, exploring, clarifying and acting on their concerns, needs
and priorities required
• Excellent interpersonal, communication, organizational and decision-making skills required
• Demonstrated leadership skills, including problem solving, critical thinking, conflict resolution and negotiation
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively with an interdisciplinary team, family members, support networks, and a variety of formal and informal service
providers
• Excellent time management and stress management skills required
• Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in the application of adult education principles preferred.
• Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, professional standards and guidelines, SJHH corporate and departmental Policies and Procedures,
including successful completion of WHMIS training required
• Knowledge of documentation standards, privacy legislation, and health record management processes required
• Computer literacy and basic proficiency is required
• A valid driver’s license, adequate insurance (minimum of $5 million personal liability) and use of a reliable vehicle required

RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Provides forensic psychiatric nursing assessment and consultation
