Job Description

At Mahaska Health the Registered Medical Supply Nurse is responsible for providing daily clinical support within Mahaska Health Sleep and Medical Supplies. This role includes coordinating and performing patient equipment setups, fittings, and education to ensure proper use of medical devices and supplies. The nurse monitors patient adherence to prescribed therapies, conducts follow-up as needed to support compliance for reimbursement purposes, and troubleshoots equipment issues to promote optimal patient outcomes and satisfaction.

Essential Job Functions include but are not limited to:

  • Provides patient education with proper fitting of equipment and supplies.
  • Reviews of orders and medical records for medical necessities.
  • Communicate with providers and teams to provide appropriate equipment.
  • Direct patient interaction in both clinical and retail-style supply settings, including education on the proper use, care, and maintenance of durable medical equipment (DME) such as CPAP/BiPAP devices, oxygen equipment, and mobility aids.
  • All duties will be performed according to the scope of practice and clinic policy.
  • Establishes treatment priorities based on medical and nursing diagnosis.
  • Documents nursing intervention and patient response.
  • Thoroughly cleans and performs basic functional tests on equipment owned by Mahaska Health Sleep and Medical Supplies.
  • Participates in the billing for the department ensuring all documentation is present to meet Certificates of Medical Necessity and Assignment of Benefits that are required for reimbursement.
  • Assists with tracking and reporting medical supply inventory levels.
  • Delivers equipment to customers’ homes when necessary.
  • Delivers and picks up equipment and supplies from other areas of the hospital and clinics.
  • Develops and maintains working knowledge of current Medicare, Medicaid, and other insurance regulations.
  • Maintains current knowledge of medical equipment available.
  • Participates in quality monitoring and process improvement activities for DME.
  • Follows infection prevention policies/procedures during patient/customer interactions. Wears appropriate PPE (personal protective equipment) while performing other job duties.
  • Reads and follows SDS sheets and handles hazardous materials following SDS.
  • Performs necessary housekeeping to help maintain the cleanliness of the department/office.
  • Communicate pertinent information regarding patient’s status to appropriate interdisciplinary team members, in a timely manner.
Job Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • A graduate from an accredited school of nursing and currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in the state of Iowa (or) a graduate from an accredited school of nursing and currently licensed as a Registered Nurse able to work in the state of Iowa.
  • Required to be current in BLS (Basic Life Support) by the standards of the American Heart Association.
  • Will be required to show proof of having completed Mandatory Reporter course at the time of hire or attend within 6 months of the start date.
  • Required to have a valid driver’s license and proof of good driving record.
  • Required to have limited liability insurance; coverage limit be $100,000 Each/ $300,000 Aggregate or $300,000 Combined Single Limit.
The work environment includes, but is not limited to:
  • Work is performed in a well-lit, well-ventilated healthcare setting.
  • Frequent hands-on equipment setup, fitting, adjustment, and demonstration, requiring manual dexterity and attention to detail.
  • Scheduled hours typically align with the posted departmental schedule; however, extended hours may be required based on patient volume, staffing needs, or operational demands.
  • Frequent use of electronic health records (EHR), scheduling systems, and communication platforms is required to support patient care and coordination.
  • Work may involve managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment that blends clinical care with customer service expectations.
  • Regular interaction with patients, families, clinical staff, physicians, and other departments is expected.
  • Prolonged periods of computer use, including sitting, typing, and working at a workstation, are required.
  • Exposure to cleaning agents, disinfectants, and medical-grade equipment during setup, maintenance, and infection control processes.
  • Potential for occasional exposure to communicable diseases when interacting with patients, requiring adherence to infection prevention protocols and use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Mobility within the facility is necessary, including occasional walking to patient care areas, meeting spaces, or other departments.
  • Occasional light lifting may be required, including transporting medical or office equipment weighing up to approximately 20 pounds.
