Job Description

The Device Clinic RN works in a highly specialized cardiac care area that encompasses management of pacemakers, defibrillators, loop recorders and remote monitors. This position requires an experienced electrophysiology-focused clinician to support the device clinic as well as in-hospital device checks. The RN performs a multitude of functions within their RN scope of practice. Strong assessment skills needed as well as advanced cardiac rhythm interpretation skills. Must possess excellent interpersonal skills. Must be able to function independently, being able to work collaboratively with the other departments and the Cardiovascular leadership team.

Education, Licensure/Certification, and Experience Requirements:

  • Nursing Diploma and/or Associate Degree in Nursing required.
  • BSN or MSN preferred
  • Current BLS certification required
  • ACLS within 6 months of employment required
  • Current and valid Registered nurse license in the Commonwealth of Virginia or from a state that is part of a Compact agreement with Virginia required
  • IBHRE certification preferred
  • Cardiac experience and cardiac rhythm interpretation required, minimum of one year required
  • Previous device clinic experience preferred

Essential Job Duties:

  • Participates in the management of the device clinic's equipment and supplies.
  • Functions as a resource regarding device/CRM issues.
  • Encourages other staff members to develop and expand their CRM knowledge and skills.
  • Participates in the department's QI processes.
  • Works collaboratively with other departments to solve issues related to patient care, particularly when related to CRM issues.
  • Educates patients and their families regarding device function and appropriate response to alarm conditions or other changes in device operation.
  • Provides wound care as directed by provider.
  • Complete patient documentation in a timely manner.
  • Help maintain the device clinic schedule and patient database to provide optimal patient care and maximize productivity.
  • Works closely with department management to ensure patient satisfaction is as high as possible as well as financial success.
  • Interpretation and reprograms pacemaker and implantable cardioverter defibrillator devices.
  • Efficient knowledge and usage of Medtronic, Boston Scientific, and other vendor’s device programmers.
  • Performs initial interrogation, threshold testing, review clinical diagnostics, perform reprogramming and print final report for physician review.
  • Documents care appropriately.
  • Relays physician recommendations to patients related to device adjustments.
  • Coordinates all home-based remote monitoring programs or devices.
  • Assists clinical staff with rooming patients and/or office visits for the physicians, if necessary, to maintain the schedule of the day.
  • Maintains and cleans clinical equipment per manufacturer's recommendations.
  • Notifies leadership and manufacturer of equipment failures in a prompt manner.
  • Provides supervision to the Device Clinic Specialist in the absence of the Supervisor.
  • Other duties as assigned/required.
