East Suffolk Council is an exciting place to work and a great place to make a real difference to people’s lives, delivering vital services to a quarter of a million people across East Suffolk.

We currently have an exciting opportunity to join East Suffolk Council's Building Control Team as a  Building Control Assistant or Registered Building Inspector

About the Role

The Building Control Assistant position is an excellent development opportunity designed to support your progression toward becoming a fully qualified Registered Building Inspector. In this training role, you will gain the essential experience, competencies, and accredited learning required for professional validation. We will fully support your enrolment in recognised training programmes, helping you build the knowledge and skills to thrive in your career.

You will play an active part in a broad range of construction projects—from small domestic alterations and extensions through to traditional low-rise housing developments. Your work will include reviewing plans, undertaking site inspections, contributing to enforcement action where needed, and ensuring that projects meet key safety, quality, and regulatory standards.

What We’re Looking For

Ideally, you will have four GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade 4 or above, including English, Maths, and Science, and be currently studying for or already hold a BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Construction or a similar qualification. A good commercial understanding of building control is beneficial, though we welcome applicants with significant, relevant experience from construction, planning, or building control backgrounds.

If you have not yet achieved a construction-related qualification, we offer supported study time to help you work towards it.

Progression to Registered Building Inspector

As you advance to a Registered Building Inspector (Band A or B / Level 4/5), you will obtain validation to carry out a wider range of technical assessments and activities. You will also demonstrate your commitment to completing a Level 4/5 accredited qualification and working towards full chartership with CABE or CIOB.

In this role, you will use your developing technical expertise and practical experience to deliver a high-quality Building Control service—ensuring buildings meet essential regulatory requirements relating to health and safety, sustainability, energy performance, accessibility, and design.

About You

The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, eager to learn, and enthusiastic about developing a professional career in Building Control. You should demonstrate:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • A well-organised, thorough approach to your work

  • Confidence in using IT systems, including Microsoft Office

  • A genuine interest in the built environment and regulatory compliance

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone looking to begin or advance their career in Building Control with the full support of a committed and experienced team.

If you think you have what it takes to be successful in this role, even if you don’t meet all the essential requirements, please apply. We would appreciate the opportunity to consider your application.
