The AWS Environmental team has responsibility for architecting and implementing AWS’s global environmental programs. This includes defining and implementing risk management and compliance systems and driving their continuous improvement; setting and refining global policies and procedures; overseeing the development of standards, tools, auditing and metrics, and employee training; ensuring effective engagement by environmental teams on global initiatives, including those that are part of Amazon’s ambitious sustainability goals; providing specialist expertise; and engaging with all AWS business units to provide scalable and effective compliance strategies that support current and future business objectives while ensuring compliance with environmental regulations.

The work of our Regional Environmental Engineers is critical to enabling AWS's growth in the US and around the world.

As a Regional Environmental Engineer (REE), you will be responsible for environmental compliance at AWS data centers in Ohio. You will develop standards and policies to support regulatory compliance, complete environmental performance analysis, establish and monitor metrics, and guide the teams in implementation of Amazon environmental standards. You will provide guidance and build effective relationships with internal and external partners, including government entities, contractors, consultants, design, construction, operations and other key stakeholders.

This position is based in Columbus, Ohio and will require travel throughout the state/US.

Key job responsibilities
• Manage and oversee compliance with environmental regulations and Amazon policy;
• Drive an environmentally responsible culture within the organization;
• Ensure work performed by contractors, consultants, and employees is completed in accordance with Amazon standards;
• Develop environmental metrics to measure, monitor and forecast performance;
• Conduct thorough and accurate environmental audits for continuous improvement;
• Prioritize and manage multiple technically complex assignments concurrently;
• Represent Amazon at appropriate levels with governmental agencies and throughout the company;
• Build collaborative relationships with various stakeholders to ensure risks are identified early and managed appropriately;
• Assist in time-critical report submission to various governmental agencies;
• Complete thorough and accurate environmental incident investigations and associated regulatory reports and develop appropriate corrective action.

A day in the life
You will partner with AWS stakeholders to develop regional and site-specific development strategies enabling the construction and operation of AWS datacenters and infrastructure. You will support environmental due diligence for site selection and acquisition, support and execute regional and site-specific environmental permitting strategies, support environmental compliance during design and construction, and prepare for data center operations. This role requires regular engagement throughout the development lifecycle with multiple AWS stakeholders including Real Estate, Legal, Risk, Water, Design, Public Policy, Construction, and Operational teams, as well as external stakeholders including regulatory agencies, consultants, and contractors.

Basic Qualifications


- Experience with environmental regulations
- Experience developing and implementing environmental compliance programs including regulated waste, water, and air regulations in accordance with applicable laws
- BA/BS degree in chemistry, chemical or environmental engineering, or related field of study

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience leading change in multiple site environments and influenceing those that are not direct reports or within your organization
- Experience in a fast paced, dynamic organization
- Experience that includes strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and effective communication abilities, or experience in technical support
- Experience in overseeing and managing projects and deadlines
- Experience successfully implementing environmental systems and compliance programs in operational settings
- Strong interpersonal skills: strong relationship builder, solid influencing and negotiation skills, and ability to coach at multiple levels

The base salary range for this position is listed below. Your Amazon package will include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location.
