Performs manual work in the collection and disposal of refuse, recyclables, and bulky items from residential and commercial locations. Work includes loading materials into collection vehicles, operating packer equipment, directing traffic as needed, and assisting with unloading at disposal sites. Duties are performed outdoors in varying weather conditions and require physical effort and adherence to established safety procedures. Work is performed under regular supervision.
Examples of duties
- Picks up refuse containers, trash, recyclable's, etc. from residence or business establishments and dumps into truck
- Operates packer equipment
- Replaces lids, cleans area around cans
- Picks up discarded furniture, household appliances, limbs, brush, leaves, and other items placed at curbside
- Directs traffic and guides truck operator in congested areas
- Helps unload truck at disposal site
RELATED TASKS:
- Assists the driver in checking the truck and the packer for proper operation.
- Cleans refuse truck and equipment.
- Performs related tasks as required.
Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of:
- Solid waste and recyclable collection methods and procedures
- Safe work practices related to refuse collection and equipment operation
- Basic traffic safety practices when working on roadways and in congested areas
- Proper lifting techniques and injury prevention practices
- Disposal site procedures and basic sanitation standards
Skilled in:

Supplemental information
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Six (6) months of experience performing heavy manual labor is required.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Abstained from the use of cigarettes, cigars, and other tobacco products for at least one year prior to their date of hire and shall abstain from the use of tobacco products at all times during the period of their employment with the City while both on and off duty.
- Possession of a valid State of Florida Class "E" driver's license with no more than six (6) points in a three (3) year period.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Must be able to lift articles weighing up to 50 lbs. and carry articles up to 30 lbs. Must be able to wear safety glasses, goggles, a safety harness, safety shoes/boots, hearing protectors, a face shield, and gloves. Exposure to extreme temperatures, animals/insects, noise, vibration, dust, vapors, fumes, mist, smoke, toxic metals, and moving mechanical parts.

Essential Employee Designation
When normal operations of City departments are suspended or interrupted due to a declaration that a state of emergency exists, any employee may be deemed essential by the City. For the preparation and/or continuation of emergency operations or for special work detail, employees deemed necessary shall be required to work.
