As a Patched Referee, you will play an important role in creating a positive and safe experience for participants in our youth and adult sports programs. You'll officiate games, promote sportsmanship, enforce rules fairly and consistently, and help foster an environment where participants can learn, compete, and have fun.
What You'll Do
- Officiate youth and adult sports games in accordance with YMCA and league rules
- Promote fair play, teamwork, and good sportsmanship among participants, coaches, and spectators
- Ensure the safety and well-being of all participants during games and activities
- Communicate rules, penalties, and game procedures clearly and professionally
- Resolve conflicts calmly and confidently while maintaining control of the game
- Build positive relationships with participants, families, coaches, and YMCA staff
- Support the overall success of YMCA sports programs through positive leadership and engagement
What We're Looking For
- Knowledge of sports rules, gameplay, and officiating standards
- Strong communication, leadership, and decision-making skills
- Ability to remain impartial and make fair, consistent judgments during competition
- Experience working with youth, sports programs, or officiating preferred
- Ability to manage challenging situations professionally and confidently
- Commitment to creating a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for all participants
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, and run for extended periods during games and events
- Ability to actively monitor gameplay and respond quickly to changing situations
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced athletic environment

Qualifications
- Previous experience with assigned game/sport
- Ability to work with minimal supervision
- Ability to maintain order in a group of people
- Ability to accept comments/criticism from others without internalizing
- Ability to maintain professional conduct at all times
- IAABO Certified (International Association of Approved Basketball Officials) preferred
