The Recycling Operations Supervisor (ROS) reports to the Recycling Operations FE or NF Manager, Recycling Operations Facility Manager I or II and is responsible for ensuring that all efforts are compliant with the company’s Health, Safety and Environmental regulations. The ROS monitors and coordinates nonferrous receiving activities to optimize efficiency of receiving, stockpiling, and processing operations, product shipping and profit maximization. The incumbent is required to effectively coordinate nonferrous processing activities with supervisory staff, commercial operations, peers, and subordinate personnel. The ROS is responsible for: inventory management; utilization of personnel and equipment to maximize processing capacity; and shipping activities. The incumbent is required to communicate with the buying group regarding material procurement needed to sustain efficient processing or to meet known order requirements. This position also requires the incumbent to be proactive and enforce process and quality standards to ensure that the material provided to consumers always meets or exceeds specifications.
This position operates within somewhat flexible parameters. The primary goal of this position is to achieve excellence in all facets of the nonferrous processing operation. Providing the highest quality product safely, effectively, and efficiently decreases accidents and errors and increases profits.
Essential Functions:
Internal Control Responsibilities:
Supports the Company’s Internal Control process which includes understanding, communicating, and complying with defined internal controls as well as suggesting and making modifications to the policies, procedures, and controls to better relate to the business.
Communicates upwards problems in operations, noncompliance with the code of conduct, or other policy violations or illegal actions.
Supervisory Responsibility:
The ROS directly supervises a group of employees within the FE & NF departments.
Job Conditions:
Exposure to physical operations at metal recycling yards; it is necessary to walk/climb in active industrial yards with uneven surfaces and to out-of-the-way areas. Occasional exposure to inclement weather conditions and some minimum travel is required. Work pressure can be substantial during peak times, requiring considerable adaptability; disturbances of workflow, and/or irregularities in work schedule are expected and occur on an intermittent basis. Offsite work involves meeting in person with select customers and visiting other Schnitzer locations.
Physical Activities Required to Perform Essential Functions:
Ability to: lift and carry up to 70 pounds occasionally; Ability to communicate by speech and hearing continuously. Communication is primarily by phone, email and sometimes in person, with other departments within the Schnitzer Group. Visual acuity needed for close detail work, preparing, and analyzing data figures and computer use.
Qualifications:
High School Diploma or equivalent; High School or better level mathematical skills: minimum 3 years metal recycling industry experience. This position requires possession of a valid driver’s license and the ability to drive an automobile.
Thorough knowledge of NF Materials Grading; good judgment, interpersonal communications; self starter; good organizational skills; ability to negotiate; past supervisory experience a plus.
