Supervise, assign, review and participate in the work of staff responsible for scheduling and coordinating recreational services, activities, programs and special events; participate in the selection training, and supervision of recreation personnel; ensure work quality and adherence to established policies and procedures and to perform the more technical and complex administrative tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.

Examples of duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Essential functions may include but are not limited to the functions listed below. Must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation.

1. Plan, prioritize, assign, supervise, review and participate in the work of staff responsible for scheduling and coordinating recreational services, activities, programs and special events.
2. Establish schedules and methods for providing assigned recreation services, activities, programs and special events; identify resource needs; review needs with appropriate management staff; allocate resources accordingly.
3. Participate in the development of policies and procedures; monitor work activities to ensure compliance with established policies and procedures; make recommendations for changes and improvements to existing standards and procedures.
4. Recommend and assist in the implementation of goals and objectives; implement approved policies and procedures.
5. Perform the more technical and complex administrative tasks of the work unit including purchasing appropriate supplies and materials relative to assigned program areas; establish contact with vendors and coordinate orders for needed supplies.
6. May plan, coordinate, promote and schedule a variety of adult and youth adventure activities such as caving, cycling, mountain biking, rock climbing and skiing and a variety of adult and youth sports activities such as: softball, baseball, flag football, basketball, racquet sports, golf, and track & field, ; organize and schedule leagues, events, clinics, lessons, and tournaments.
7. May locate and recruit athletic league officials for officiating at various sporting events; schedule officials for games and arrange for compensation.
8. May review reports of game activities and events; ensure proper functioning and officiating of sports.
9. May plan for and coordinate a variety of sports and adventure activities including soccer, basketball and football; schedule program activities, provide responsible instruction, conduct program and special event evaluations.
10. Participate in the selection of assigned recreation services staff; provide or coordinate staff training; work with employees to correct deficiencies; implement corrective procedures.
11. Participate in the preparation and administration of the assigned recreation services program budget; submit budget recommendations; monitor expenditures.
12. Prepare analytical and statistical reports on operations and activities.

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Attend and participate in professional group meetings; stay abreast of new trends and innovations within assigned recreation service program field.
2. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Qualifications

Education and experience directly related to the minimum requirements below may be interchangeable on a year for year basis.

Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in recreation; and

Four (4) years of recreation experience; and

To include one (1) year of supervisory or lead experience.

Certification or membership in the New Mexico Recreation and Parks Association preferred.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver's License or the ability to obtain by date of hire.
Possession of a City Operator's Permit (COP) within 6 months from date of hire.
May be required to work weekends, evenings, odd days off.

Indoor and outdoor recreational facilities; travel from site to site; exposure to heat.

Physical:
Essential and supplemental functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for walking, standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time.
