Buncombe County Parks & Recreation is hiring a Recreation Facility Assistant, a hands-on role supporting our daily park operations. This position reports to the Recreation Program Coordinator and follows a variable schedule, with shifts commonly including weekday evenings and weekends.
This position will work approximately 4 shifts for a total of approximately 17 hours per week. These shifts will typically be weekday evenings and varied shifts on weekends (morning, midday and/or evening).
The primary work location is Buncombe County Sports Park, though assignments may occasionally rotate to other recreation sites across the county. This position primarily opens, monitors, and closes County Parks, along with speaking to park visitors, assisting them with questions, emptying trash, picking up litter, completing janitorial tasks, and some light maintenance.
As part of a small, collaborative team, the Facility Assistant helps maintain park cleanliness, interacts with the public, and upholds a welcoming and safe environment for all visitors. Responsibilities may also include occasional event support when needed. The role requires the ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and to perform physically active tasks. This is a vital support role in a community-focused department that values teamwork, professionalism, and proactive service.
The final candidates for this position will be required to submit to a drug test after offer. Please note that CBD or Delta-9 Hemp products may cause a positive drug test.

The purpose of this position is to perform a wide variety of tasks to support our daily park operations within the Recreation Department.
Minimum Education, Training and/or Experience (required at time of hire): High school diploma or GED, and a minimum of one (1) year of experience in customer services or maintenance work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the State of North Carolina.
The work is primarily medium work requiring exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, fingering, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and walking. The work is primarily active/outdoor work requiring standing for extended periods in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, wind and rain.
