Accountabilities:
Client Services:
- Follow individual goals for participants and document actions on client care plan.
- Facilitate a variety of leisure/ recreational activities according to established recreation plan.
- Engage clients in individual, small, and large group opportunities, which correspond to the identified leisure needs and interests.
- Ensure the safety of the clients while involved in leisure/recreational activities both inside and outside of the building.
- Assist or facilitate as required with the safe arrival and departure of participants.
- Perform room set up and facility cleaning routines daily.
- Decorate building seasonally and in celebration of special events as required.
- Support participants and provide washroom, ambulation, and feeding assistance as required.
- Assist program staff during staff absences for meal and comfort breaks.
- Follow participant care plan and update as required.
- Maintain accurate documentation and records.
- Report any actual or potential problems/situations to the Program Supervisor or designate.
- Report any identified needs to team members, Program Supervisor and/or on–call designate and caregiver.
- Complete and submit incident reports.
- Perform other position related duties as required.
Working Conditions:
- This is a casual-relief position.
- This is elect-to-work, no guaranteed hours; work will be offered on an as needed basis as per the hours of operation.
- Frequent lifting, twisting, bending, crouching, reaching, pushing and pulling.
- Walking and standing for long periods.
- Some kneeling, running may be required.
Normal hours of work: shifts will include days, and weekends.

Education, Qualifications and Certifications:
- Completion of a College Diploma in Therapeutic Recreation or related area of study.
- Bilingual in French is preferred; other languages an asset.
- Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements:
- Minimum of one (1) year of prior work experience working with cognitively impaired/frail elderly populations.
- Current Gentle Persuasive Approach training an asset.
- Current Standard First Aid & CPR Certification.
- Montessori for Dementia Care certificate would be an asset.
- U-First Training would be an asset.
- Interest and previous experience or skills in crafts, music, art, fitness, etc.
Skills and Capabilities:

- Ability to work independently and participate as an active and responsible team member in a cooperative team environment.
- Must be able to lift 50lbs
- Participate in regular supervision and performance appraisal process.
- Ensure that all certifications are maintained as required.
- Represent the organization in a positive, professional and engaging manner.
- Must comply with all Salvation Army policies, procedures and associated legislation.
- Exhibit good listening skills, have strong oral/written communication skills and respect authority.
- Self-motivated/disciplined.
- Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, integrity, and adaptability.
- Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills.
- Lead by example, by demonstrating a strong work ethic and a willingness to learn and be flexible in the face of change.
- Proficiency in all Microsoft Office products is required - i.e. Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint; Email and Internet; ability to successfully interact with iPads/tablets and Smart Boards.
- Ability to apply effective body mechanics and meet the physical demands of the position.
- Provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required. The screening is secured either through the national Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) or through a local police detachment.
- May require screening through The Salvation Army Abuse Registry.
- Develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.

Compensation:
The target hiring range for this position is $23.10 to $28.88 with a maximum of $34.65.
Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
