POSITION SUMMARY:
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Under the direction of the Recreation Director, the Recreation Coordinator manages the Girls on the Run® program and other outdoor youth empowerment programming. The program provides a safe, supportive, and empowering environment that teaches goal-setting, cooperation, healthy decision-making, and self-respect while training for a 5K event. The Coordinator is responsible for program administration, site and coach management, curriculum and equipment oversight, volunteer leadership, safety, and community outreach, ensuring high-quality, mission-aligned experiences.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Coordinate new and existing Recreation Program sites, ensure compliance with YMCA and Girls on the Run policies, and market the program while building strong relationships with schools and community partners.
- Recruit, screen, train, and support qualified volunteer coaches, ensuring all sites are fully staffed and compliant with training, background check, and CPR/First Aid requirements.
- Enforce coaching policies, drive continuous improvement, and maintain high visibility and accessibility to participants, families, and volunteers. Maintain roster, participation, and scholarship data for Recreation Programs.
- Ensure emotional and physical safety by enforcing best practices, maintaining safe environments, and ensuring appropriate running routes and course conditions for all participants and coaches.
- Assist all aspects of summer camp programming, including planning, implementation, staffing coordination, and adherence to safety and organizational standards.
- Represent the Whatcom Family YMCA and Girls on the Run at community events and meetings as assigned.
- Purchase, manage, and distribute curriculum materials, snacks, apparel, and program equipment while maintaining accurate inventory across all sites.
- Coordinate with YMCA departments regarding shared equipment and van usage to ensure timely program support.
- Serve as a member of the YMCA staff team, supporting overall branch operations.
- Follow YMCA and Girls on the Run policies and procedures regarding protecting youth from abuse; including screening and selection, training and supervision, and responding to allegations. Communicate to all staff and volunteers the organization’s commitment to protect youth from abuse.
- Follow mandated reporting requirements.

QualificationsQUALIFICATIONS:
- Passion for the Girls on the Run and YMCA missions and commitment to youth development and whole-person health.
- Strong understanding of empowerment, self-esteem, body image, and social-emotional learning.
- Excellent communication, organization, and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, work independently, and adapt in a fast-paced environment.
- CPR, First Aid, AED, Bloodborne Pathogens, and Child Abuse Prevention certifications (or ability to obtain prior to working with children).
- Must be able to get quickly to various locations throughout Whatcom County with personal transportation or YMCA van certification required.
Preferred:
- Experience with Girls on the Run or similar youth development programs.
- Nonprofit program management, fundraising, and volunteer leadership experience.
- Strong community connections and experience working with boards or advisory groups.
