Job Description

  • Highschool diploma required
  • Proof of enrolment in the Therapeutic Recreation Diploma program or have post-secondary certificate related to Therapeutic Recreation desirable.
  • Participates in the planning, organizing, implementing and evaluation of recreational programs based on the needs, interests and abilities of those Residents following assessments.
  • Maintains appropriate records of planned programs and attendance as they relate to individual residents. Other related records include: cleaning checklists and communication documents.
  • Actively encourages residents to attend programs by assisting them to events and coordinate with volunteers as needed.
  • Assists residents with activities of daily living, which may include after meal cleaning, transporting, preparation for outings, etc.
  • Plans and implements therapeutic exercise programs, in collaboration with rehab team.
  • Accompanies and supervises residents on outings; i.e. museums, picnics, botanic gardens, etc.
  • Sets up and cleans areas where programs are held, including decorating to suit the occasion, involving residents as much as possible.
  • Responsible for assistance in training, supervising, and evaluating, volunteers and Recreation students in the home.
  • Performs all duties in accordance with the written policies and procedures of Extendicare, the facility, and the Recreation Department.
  • Performs all duties in a manner that is safe, protects themselves and others, and in-line with Extendicare’s OH&S policies and programs in addition to provincial regulations and laws.
  • Performs duties in accordance with prescribed sanitation and infection control procedures.
  • Respects residents’ rights to dignity and privacy and performs duties in a courteous and respectful manner.
  • Adheres to “Standards of Employee Conduct”, “Commitment to Residents”, “Bill of Rights”, and “Extendicare Quality Care Standards” as well as the Mission, Vision and Values of Extendicare.
  • Works closely and cooperates with other staff and residents. Maintains good working relationships with other departments.
  • Participates in committees, meetings, education in-services as required.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
