Job Description

Under the supervision of the Executive Director of Clinical Services, the Peer Recovery Specialist provides peer-to-peer recovery support services and may perform specialized activities and functions to assist individuals in their recovery.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. In collaboration with the individual, develop an individualized recovery action plan which should include culturally competent and relevant services that identifies goals with measurable objectives, assesses strengths, can be used to work towards those goals, identifies barriers that can inhibit goal attainment, and monitors progress made attaining those goals.
  2. Educate the individuals on how to navigate treatment, social service and recovery support systems.
  3. Provide recovery support services based on the individual's preference and his/her assessed needs.
  4. Support the individuals as they move through the stages of change to encourage them in their recovery.
  5. Assist the individuals with accessing recovery support services in the community.
  6. Work collaboratively with the case manager to ensure the individual engages in services and transitions to the next level of care when indicated.
  7. Be a positive role model by sharing experiential knowledge, hope, and skills.
  8. Maintain relationships with the individual to assist him/her in the treatment engagement and retention process.
  9. Reinforce, guide, and reassure the individual that recovery is possible, and is built on multiple strengths, coping abilities, and the resources of each individual.
  10. Assist the individual with gaining skills and resources needed to initiate and maintain recovery and maintain compliance with MAT if it is part of their treatment.
  11. Assist in establishing and sustaining a social and physical environment supportive of recovery.
  12. Enhance identification and participation in the recovery community.
  13. Advocate for appropriate and effective community treatment and recovery.
  14. Empower individuals to make self-determined and self-directed choices about their recovery pathway.
  15. Provide support with face to face sessions and/or telephone support based on the individual's personal choice.
  16. Help individuals maintain healthy community, family and social functioning.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION: high school or equivalent diploma

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION
- Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS) or National Certified Peer Recovery Support Specialist (NCPRSS) credential or obtained

- Must complete DMHAS' three-day Ethics training

EXPERIENCE:

- Two years of lived experience in the principles of recovery to assist individuals to improve their health and wellness, live a self-directed life, and reach their full potential.
- Must be intimately familiar with the local recovery community and knowledgeable of all local social services, businesses, faith-based organizations and neighborhoods.

- Continually pursues goal of integrating cultural competency into recovery support.

- Bilingual a plus, Spanish preferred.

PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

Demonstrates the technical competencies as established on the Assessment and Evaluation Tool.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position requires repetitive motion, hearing, pushing, reaching, and reading, seeing, speaking, standing and walking a majority of the time. Spends time with such equipment as computer terminal, fax machine, copier, and telephone.

This position reports to department leadership.
