Employment Type: Full Time – Permanent.

Salary Range: T3, Level 5, $102,000- $120,000 per year. The final compensation for this position will be determined based on individual factors, including education, qualifications, experience, and internal equity.

The Opportunity­­

Are you an analytical and creative individual who is passionate about protecting the environment? The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is seeking a Reclamation Assessor to join our Enterprise Reclamation team. The AER is responsible for overseeing all oil, gas and coal reclamation activities in the province to ensure that previously disturbed land has equivalent capability to support uses that are similar to what existed prior to disturbance.

This role will become part of a large geographically dispersed team of professionals that review reclamation applications, complete reclamation audits and provide guidance to internal and external stakeholders on the reclamation program. The Reclamation Assessor will undertake a mixture of office and field-based activities. This is an exciting opportunity for a self-motivated professional to take ownership of meaningful and challenging work, and apply critical thinking skills to make timely, impactful decisions while contributing to environmental stewardship across the province.

What your day-to-day will look like:

  • Conduct technical reviews & audits of reclamation certificate applications for oil and gas sites located on public and private lands to determine if the reclamation application meets government policy and criteria.

  • Interact with external stakeholders to address their concerns relating to reclamation.

  • Demonstrate professional judgement, problem solving, strategic thinking and creativity in the role while supporting AER vision, mandate, culture and processes.

  • Provide technical advice to internal and external stakeholders on criteria, variances, justifications, policy and procedural aspects of the reclamation program.

  • Interact with industry and consultants to clarify requirements and provide advice to improve environmental performance.

What we’re looking for in you:

  • Bachelor’s degree or diploma in environmental science, engineering, soil science, or biology (i.e. land reclamation, biology, soil science, forestry, or a related field).

  • 6+ years of directly related experience in reclamation.

  • Experience preparing and/or reviewing reclamation applications using the Alberta 2010 Reclamation Criteria for Wellsite’s and Associated Facilities.

  • Sound knowledge of Alberta 2010 Reclamation Criteria for Wellsite’s and Associated Facilities.

  • Knowledge of Canadian System of Soil Classification.

  • Strong knowledge of native grass vegetation species and grassland ecosystems.

  • Knowledge of reclamation and land management practices.

Additional Information:

  • Additional training (e.g., First Aid, H2S Alive, Ground Disturbance, Driver Training) are considered assets.

  • Pre-placement Medical required.

  • Possess a fully valid class 5 driver’s license along with a positive driving record.

  • This role includes a mixture of office-based and field activities. Travel will be required approximately 40% of the time with some overnight travel required. (Approximately 10-15 overnight stays per year).
